Yes! Yes! Yes!
Last week was the final instalment for my Game Improvement Champion Ian Moore, it's been a cracking couple of months working and getting to know Ian's game. All the changes have been fairly basic but still vital so keeping the goal of improving consistency achievable. Ian has practiced steadily over the past weeks making the necessary changes. I emphasised on Saturday the importance of continuing the good work done so far as I was confident better results were not too far away. Little did I know what was around the corner...
On Saturday in The Monthly Medal & Burden Trophy Ian returned his best competition score since 2nd March 2013 which just shows, a) how much Ian has been struggling with his game and b) what an effect structured and concentrated lessons can have on your golf game. With his new found form Ian managed to shoot a great score of nett 69, which included an 8 on the 11th and a 7 on the 14th, with that also came a cut of 2.4 off his handicap.
To complete Ian's journey I carried out a custom fit where we focused solely on irons. Ian fancied a go at the NEW PING GMax clubs and the results were fantastic, on average each iron was going an extra 10 yards which makes all the difference when searching for improved performance.
Another significant finding was that Ian's current clubs (from a lie angle perspective) are too flat, meaning the toe of the club is contacting the ground too early, spinning the club open at impact. After a slight change to the lie angle (using PING's colour code system) to suit Ian's swing you'll see the strike marks on the fitting tape were now from the centre, which lead to much straighter shots... The power of fitting!
What with his new found form a new set of irons could hold the secret to that handicap tumbling even more!
This is what Ian had to say about the 8 weeks:
'Well eight weeks have just flown by; after the lesson on Saturday I went out and played in the Burden trophy and returned a 69, this was the first time I have ever played below my handicap and I have now been cut and this is entirely due to Warren. Over the last 8 weeks he has taken the time to advise and encourage me to change my game without overloading me with things to do I am so much more confident on the course .It won't stop here , I will carry on having lessons as this has been a real eye opener. Many thanks Warren, onwards and upwards!'
James' Baby
It is with great pleasure we can announce that James our greenkeeper and his fiancée Samantha have had a little baby boy naming him James. James Jnr was born 2 months early and weighed just 3lbs but thankfully both Samantha & James Jnr are in fine health and should be coming home soon. No doubt James will be itching to get a set of clubs into James Jnr's hands but the question is where the most convenient place to buy the clubs is? Congratulations James & Samantha!
Bob Florence Course Record
Bob carried on his fine form in the Midweek Medal last Wednesday shooting a 63 which is 8 under par equalling the course record, blowing the field out of the water and claiming a 5 shot victory.
Bob's round included a sensational -7 front 9, known as the elusive 29, and a much more steady back 9 of 34, -1 which also had 2 bogies in there!
This great round of golf was enough to drop Bob's new found handicap of scratch to +1, something that he has wanted for a while now and no doubt is over the moon about.
Well done Bob!
Medal Results
Saturday was the Monthly Medal & Burden Trophy, with 133 players competition was fierce so some exceptional golf would be needed if somebody wanted to win. This is exactly what Peter Hynes felt he had to do in order to return his fantastic score of nett 65, gross 70, a round which included 10 straight pars from the 9th; a very solid round.
What else would you expect from Peter? After this round Peter's handicap took a cut of 0.8 taking him down to 3.7, whoever is in charge of the handicaps needs to take a look at this! In a close second place was Dibran Zeqiri who also had a fantastic round of nett 66, gross 69 with a slightly more exciting card consisting on anything from a 2 to 6!
Things were a little tighter in Division Two with four players tied at the top so we had to turn to a countback with Howard Comber coming out on top piping Brian Rhodes, George Penhaligan and of course my Game Improvement Champion, Ian Moore. Howard's handicap got a major slashing from 14.7 to 13.0 due to him being on a purple patch and returning some very good scores, the challenge is on now Howard!
While I was away supporting Alfie Plant last week Rob stepped in for my Captain/Pro match against Mark Ward & Brian Wilson who proved to be a firm test and managed to scrape a halve. Peter & Rob found themselves 3 down with 4 to play; could my Captain/Pro undefeated record be in jeopardy? Of course not, Peter & Rob found another gear winning 15, 16 & 17 with birdie, par and birdie meaning standing on the 18th tee the match was all flat. Once they got to the green, a gentleman's halve was welcomed by both sides.
I had my first Captain/Pro match with Peter Goodsell this week and we were up against 2 in form players, Shaun Murphy & Theo Theodorou which promised to be a tough match.
Thankfully Peter & myself gelled extremely well and dispatched of Shaun & Theo by 3&2 which again continues my glorious undefeated run by another match and well into my second year...
Is there anybody out there up to the challenge?

Keith Hills
Keith will be representing R&CPGC this week at Frilford Heath GC after winning the Monthly Medal & EGU Gold Medal on 11th April with a classy nett 67.
The next stage will include 63 players from up and down the country who have won their respective regions with handicaps ranging from 2 to 25!
The chosen few were decided by the difference of their nett score and the CSS for the day for their course, for Keith he was a whopping 6 under par.
Keith puts his form down to the clubs he got custom fitted for at the tail end of last year. As you know we are not one's to boast about custom fitting or lesson success but Keith twisted our arm to mention his own fitting success.
We will all be rooting for you Keith!
