Greetings from Warren Wood
Rochester & Cobham Park GC - PGA Golf Professional

The 144th Open Championship

With the season very much in full flow it is that time of year when all the top players take to the links so they can battle it out for The Claret Jug.  Far more important than that however, this means the return of our R&CPGC Open Championship Putting Competition, meaning the champion secures bragging rights for a whole year.

Last year's winner, the rather shy and retiring Terry Watts, has been putting in some hard practice with the flat stick hoping to defend his title.

If you think you can knock Terry off his throne then come and have a go on Sunday 19th July between 11:30am and 1:30pm.  Entry is £1 per go and can be made on the putting green where one of us will be witnessing history unfold.

Short Game Clinics

With a majority of a golfers shots coming around the green I thought I would put a series of short game clinics together so I can pass on my pearls of wisdom to help you guys shave some more precious shots off your handicap.  The clinics will be running across all 4 days of The Open so that when you are cheering on those all important sweepstake picks, you can relate to those tricky up and downs the players are making.

If you are interested sign up is made via the Pro Shop.

Open Sweepstake Draw

We have made the draw for The Open sweekstake. Please click here or on the image of the draw to see a larger version. So who got Jordan and Dustin?

Discount Balloons

Don't forget for the weekend of The Open we also have our discount balloons! When you purchase any stock item, choose one of the balloons and whatever percentage discount is inside you will get that off your purchase. This fantastic offer will only be running from 7:30am on Saturday till 5:00pm on Sunday (hope you're reading this Henry!) so don't miss out on up to 50% discounts!

6 weeks have passed since the start of Ian's journey the time has gone so quickly I can't really believe it, but the changes have been incredible and I'm sure with some regular practice further improvements are just around the cornerHis alignment is improving on those short approaches and the feedback from Ian's perspective is all good.

Since my last report in week 3 Ian and I have concentrated solely on improving his bunker technique, which in his own words is costing him whole rounds, not just a few shots.  We've improved the tension in his hands, the connection and rotation of the body in the backswing and follow through.  A complete overhaul technically but the results are starting to come together.

As you can see from the snapshot 1 Ian struggled to swing through the sand to a finish, he was using a technique I call 'The Tomahawk', basically this involves gripping the club as hard as possible, swing faster than a speeding bullet and hitting down in the sand as though you were searching for water in the vein hope that something other than a truck load of sand leaves the bunker.  Inevitably that is all that happens!

The main cause of this is body connection.  Primarily Ian was trying to generate speed with only his arms, so I got him to feel as though the swing started with his chest, giving him a much more rounded look to the swing, eliminating the chop and creating a sweeping action across the sand.  This leads to unrivalled speed propelling Ian in to a lovely natural finish.

Snapshot 2 shows Ian hitting through the sand and not at it, perfect!

Ian's thoughts:

'The long awaited session in the bunker proved not to be a quick fix.  Warren has been very patient with a pupil who has played the wrong way for many years, but now things start to make sense and I can start to train my body to move in different ways.  Warren has broken down the swing in the bunker into three component parts, takeaway , down swing and follow through.  Each part I have been practicing, it's now a matter of putting them together in one smooth motion to get the desired result.  Practice, Practice, Practice, it's the only way.'

Midsummer Madness

Hog Roast, a live soul singer, a relaxed game of golf and all for just £20 per head!

On Saturday 15th August we are having a golfer & non-golfer fun competition over 9 holes where the non-golfer does all of the putting!

A 5 o'clock shotgun start launches you into the red hot heat of battle (laughter compulsory and no trying allowed!).  Once back at the clubhouse there's a Hog Roast to be devoured and the mellow tones of Jaysen to be enjoyed.  If that's not enough, children under 12 are welcome FREE of charge.

You won't want to miss out on what's going to be a fantastic evening.  Bookings are being taken by the lovely Wendy and her team behind the bar, places are limited so don't delay, book today!!

Please note this is an evening event centred around the patio, so please feel free to bring your own chairs (and blankets, just in case).

PING Demo Clubs

Are you looking to change your armoury around the greens? Well this is the perfect time because we just so happen to have a wide range of demo PING putters and wedges for you to test drive.

Why not take them onto the course or even out onto the practice facilities and give them a rigorous test. The PING Candence putters come with 2 different inserts on the face to maximise results for golfers with faster and slower tempo strokes and both putters use the variable depth groove system, so even those miss hit putts still have a chance of dropping in!

PING have designed the Glide wedges with distance control their main priority.  Putting longer grips on means the golfer can grip further down the club if need be.

Guess The Weight Update

If we thought it was great that 3 members have come together to raise money for the Captain's Charity well we couldn't even imagine the fantastic support that the membership have given to this worthy cause.

Having been running for just over 2 weeks we have raised over £175!!  If you haven't had a go yet there's no need to worry, the weigh in doesn't take place until Saturday 1st August so there's still plenty of time to enter.  I must say the sight of Graham West carrying his bag up 18 last Saturday had me worried, could this be an attempt at rigging the result I thought.  Not if what I witnessed once he hit the clubhouse is anything to go by!

Entries can be made either via the Pro Shop or in the Bar, each guess is £2, half the money goes to the Captain's Charity and the other half goes to the person with the closest guess.
