Some folk may have thought I swanned off to America for a jolly up and to lie in the sun soaking up some rays. Don't kid yourselves.
Before I left I took the opportunity to arrange a few fitting sessions in and around the New York area. That I'm a UK fitting centre for TaylorMade, PING & Srixon made it easy to find facilities and fellow pro's with similar set ups.
First week away I laid on a TaylorMade day at Baltusrol Golf Club, to my amazement, first up at 7:30am bowled none other than Dustin Johnson! Yes, that Dustin Johnson.
An hour later and we had him fitted right through the bag, imagine my reaction when he asked me to order him a set and have them delivered to Palm Beach Gardens in Florida.
It couldn't get any better than that.
Or could it?
A few days later and I was at Merion Golf Club doing a PING fitting. From my position on the range I was excited to see Bubba Watson playing eighteen and hoped I might get the chance to have a chat. I couldn't believe it when he walked off the green straight over to the bay next to me and started hitting balls. From the conversation he was having with his caddy it was obvious he was struggling with his driving. Being that I had my brand new GC2 launch monitor set up and never one to let an opportunity slip by, I asked him if he'd like me to take a look. He laughed and cracked a joke, but at the same time wandered in and started hitting balls from my bay. Watching the data on my monitor I had a feeling and as he continued chatting to anyone in earshot I matched the head he was using to a slightly different shaft and offered it to him. He took it, hit some balls and our friendship was instantly cemented. He even asked me if I'd like to join his team. I didn't know what to say!
By now my 'holiday' was complete. Sally and I took off and enjoyed some down time whilst I thought about the Shop and all the members I was missing so. It really was the best holiday I've ever had. As a favour to an old friend, just before we came home I dropped in to Pinehills Golf Club where they had just taken delivery of their Srixon Custom Fit Cart. As part of the launch package J.B. Holmes was on hand to do a demo and show off the hardware. He turned out to be a really nice fella and we had a laugh. In spite of that I couldn't help notice he was getting just a touch steep at times and we spent a bit of time looking at that. I also took half a degree of loft off his driver and found him an extra few yards.
If I live to be 100 years old I can't imagine I'll ever have a better holiday. In fact I might as well not bother going away again, be as well to just stay in the Shop and do what I do.

No respite for me, it's straight back to it. We have two demo days of our own on the horizon.

Rob's bit.
Last week I was away at The Belfry attending my second year PGA residential course for 5 days. The aim of the week is to prepare assistants for the end of year exams which take place in April, detail what is to come in year 3 (the final year) and also a practical exam for the Custom Fitting & Equipment Technology module.
The practical exam consisted of building a club to a certain specification from just the components provided: a clubhead, shaft, ferrule, grip and shaft decal. I was also asked to cut the club down, adjust the loft and lie and also change the club's swing weight to a specific measurement.
The whole week was thoroughly enjoyable and very informative. I'm looking forward not only to putting what I learnt into practice, but also passing on the information to members to help improve your game.
Spring is springing.
This past few days have been a joy to behold. There's been sunshine, a bit of warmth and faces with smiles beaming. The range has been busy as members get the desire back and rusty games come out for an airing.
Now that we have two teaching Pro's on site there's even more opportunity for that pre-season tune up. Rob's eager to build on his training and he's just such a nice guy!!
