What a Cracker of a Day!
Christmas Eve witnessed the second annual Xmas Eve Staff Challenge and what a belter it turned out to be.
A field of forty folk assembled for the 11:00 am shotgun start. Almost everyone wore something blue to mark the event which was played from the BLUE tees. The air was filled with laughter and bon homie as people found their partners and headed out to their start positions. Conditions were wonderful, it was a joy to be on the golf course. It would turn out that there was a little too much Christmas spirit at hand, but not in the way one might suspect.
Generosity has long since been our downfall in the Pro Shop as we invariably give things away too cheaply, on this occasion we outdid ourselves. FOUR courtesy shots to each team, plus TWO more to each lady member was too much for even our undoubted talents to bear. Despite playing the best golf, as one might expect, returning easily the lowest gross score on the day; we were to be denied our deserved victory as a direct result of that aforementioned generosity.
A couple of hours graft and a gross return of 7 under through 9 holes seemed like a job well done. Indeed, ordinarily it might well have been expected to have secured another in a long line of famous victories. On this occasion however, the handicapping committee had made a tragic error. 7 under through 9 proved to be of little consequence against the shear volume of Christmas gifts lavished upon the challengers by an over generous Santa!
Once all the cards were returned and the counting was complete, the spread of net scores was actually very close. Only 3.5 shots separated the 10 teams that took part, which was great to see. Tea & chips were provided in vast quantities and every competitor was presented with a commemorative prize. For a couple of hours the clubhouse was buzzing, Terry Watts hosted a swindle and the Red Wine boys had.....some red wine! A cracking atmosphere and good to see.
Mark Riddick (far right above) brought along his guest Bill Humphries (left edge), Bill is a member at Wildernesse. Paul Rome (centre of the group) invited John Daly to make up the 4. John has been a member at Mid Kent for some years, but he enjoyed the occasion so much that he filled out his application to join R&CPGC on the spot, that's the power of the BLUE.
Not that anyone cared, but the winners on the day were Ernie Hemming, Brian Whybrow and Ray Pooley. A big shout goes out to them. Proceedings were concluded with the drawing of the last 2 Advent Raffle prizes. Graham Dunnachie was first out to secure a pair of TaylorMade wedges and to our unbridled delight XXXL Terry Wickham took the final offering, an XP Tour waterproof suit, which we are currently negotiating to buy in from the descendants of Bertram Mills.
