Which wedges should you choose?
There's no loft combination which is better than another but there is a common pitfall to avoid...inconsistent gapping. An ideal scenario would be four degrees of loft between each wedge which will make distance control a whole lot easier. The average loft of a pitching wedge is 43-45 degrees which is an important piece of information to know before you dive in and decide which wedges will follow. The most common loft choices now are 50/54/58 or 52/56/60 but with pitching wedge lofts becoming stronger you may even have to add an extra wedge in the bag. |

Lofts of the club are an important choice to make but not as much as getting the right bounce... |
The question is though, what is the bounce? The bounce is the angle created between the leading edge and the sole of the club. So the greater the bounce the higher the leading edge sits off the ground at address. The bounce must compliment your angle of attack (AoA) in order for you to hit good shots...if the bounce and AoA don't match up, you could be in for a world of pain. Mismatched bounces may even be the reason for your poor short game? So, if you tend to dig at impact and take deep divots this means you have a steep AoA and would require a higher bounce so that the club can glide through the turf easier. Likewise, if you don't take a divot or it's a shallow one then you'll need a lower bounce. |
| All this time, your bounces have been holding you back |
|
The style of golf course you play can also affect what bounces you'll require. On a firmer golf course with lots of tight lies, like links courses, you may need to opt for lower bounce wedges, likewise, if you play on a softer course then a higher bounce will be better suited. If you have a sneaky suspicion you're playing with the wrong wedges, come into the Pro Shop and have a chat with one of the team and we can show you some of the options we have in stock including the BRAND NEW Callaway Jaws MD5, Titleist Vokey SM7, and Cleveland RTX4 & CBX. Also, in the coming weeks, we will have the BRAND NEW Titleist Vokey SM8 which have some amazing new technology this year...but we'll keep you hanging on that one. |
England vs. Scotland
The annual battle took place last Saturday to coincide with The Calcutta Cup, where Chieftain Alistair MacDonald raised the clans for another encounter against the forces of England under the Captaincy of General Packer. Following their heavy defeat last year, the Scots were out for revenge, and with the first three matches going North of the Border, it seemed a foregone conclusion. England took match 4 with match 5 the only one to finish all square, so when match 6 went to Scotland, it was all over, despite both matches 7 and 8 going to England. When Mr MacDonald was made aware of the result.....we think we actually saw him smile. The teams then tucked into a great curry lunch from Danny & the team and settled down in front of the big screen for the rugby. Thanks to all players for again making this (friendly?) match a success for the 26th year.

Pro Shop Face Lift
This week the ProShop had a bit of a makeover with a new carpet being fitted, the 13+ year-old predecessor had seen plenty of action and needed retiring. One of our objectives this winter was to make the Pro Shop a more inviting shopping experience and a hub of activity. Aside from the new carpet, we've also invested in some new display stands and are trying to make the place feel more homely. These new stands will house all the BRAND NEW Under Armour, Peter Millar and FootJoy clothing as well as all the BRAND NEW FootJoy, Skechers and Under Armour shoes. This is just the beginning of the Pro Shop transformation but as even more BRAND NEW toys come in, we'll be constantly developing to make the Pro Shop the place to be. |
Bonus Ball
There was no lucky winner last week which means this week's draw will be a ROLLOVER. Somebody could be walking away with a prize worth £170 so make sure you're definitely in this week's draw. |
A recent golf survey highlighted some very interesting statistics regarding golfers' habits and their equipment, two of which you can see in the image below. |
These stats might not mean a lot to you at face value, but the general recommendation is that you change your grips once a year, especially if you play regular golf. The truth is, grips lose their efficiency over time and when they do we end up gripping the club too tightly, which restricts our ability to swing the club freely. Just something for you to think about... | |
|
It's not only important that your grips are regularly replaced, but you need to ensure you get the correct sized grips. Our FREE grip fitting promotion has just started in-store and we recommend everyone giving it a try. Call us on 01474 823658 to take advantage. |
