On the Course...
Last week we informed you of the success of three of our teams, reaching the final of their relevant knockouts. Find out how they got on below...
Perman Shield
After some toing and froing with arrangements for the final, the venue was decided by a flip of a coin, but who would get home advantage R&CPGC or Wildernesse?
The coin fell in our favour and so R&CPGC had home advantage. This didn't seem to count for much in the morning foursomes where the scores sat at 3-1 to the "visitors". The highlight of the morning session was Danny Dalton & Mike Puddy recovered from dormie 4 down to steal half a point with a superb up and down on the 18th hole.
R&CPGC backs were against the wall and performance needed to improve if they were to defend their 2018 title. Our boys came out the traps flying and a fightback was on the cards but Wildernesse didn't get to the final by a stroke of luck and their resilience shone through to claw some games back and even turn a few around. Just like Sunday afternoon at Augusta, the back nine is where it all got very interesting. Shaun Macklin was 1 down with one hole to go and just hit his tee shot left, by the 17th tee and his opponent down the middle. Both players managed to hit the green but Shaun's nerves held out longer than his opponents as he calmly 2 putted whilst his opponent three putted; Shaun steals a half. Behind was Danny Dalton who was all square through 17 holes, but thanks to Shaun's half Danny only needed a half to retain the Perman Shield. Danny was just shy of the 18th green in two and faced a snakey putt up the green. The competitor inside Danny re-surfaced and he managed to nestle his ball up next to the hole and with his competitor missing a par putt meant R&CPGC won the Perman Shield. Well done lads, capping off an awesome season. If you want to see the full results take a look below... |

Kent Amateur Foursomes While the action was unfolding at home, four more of our scratch boys were trying to win the Kent Amateur Foursomes at Sittingbourne & Milton Regis GC, a trophy that has eluded R&CPGC since its formation. Captain Mike Bush and his team arrived early to view the course and get themselves prepared for the biggest final of their golf careers. What they didn't prepare for, however, was a deluge of rain which closed the course right up until their tee time!
|
Match 1, consisting of Nick Panting and Ricky Hall, took control of the game right from the off and by the time they reached the 10th tee they were 6 up. Match 2, with Mike Bush and Sam Shearer, had a much closer contest and finished the front 9 all square. Bush and Shearer looked like they would take a hold at the start of the back nine, but after a huge save by the opposition at the 12th and then a couple of errors by our team on holes 14-16, they were suddenly 3 down on the 17th tee. However, Hall and Panting held their nerve up front and finished their match 6up and so the contest was over. Bush and Shearer finished 3 down so R&CPGC won by 3 holes overall. A tremendous achievement by our team, many congratulations to all who played throughout the season! |

Jordan Godwin represents GB&I
One of our attached Professionals, Jordan Godwin, has had a fantastic season getting a number of wins under his belt, the most recent being the PGA South Region Matchplay KO.
Jordan's reward for his fantastic form was a place on the PGA Cup team for GB&I to take on the USA in their own backyard.

| Barton Creek |
|
Jordan and his nine team-mates headed to Austin, Texas for Barton Creek Resort & Spa where battle would commence over three days. The PGA Cup follows the same format as the Ryder Cup with three different formats in play; foursomes, better ball and singles match play.
| | Who’s idea was it to put the tallest at the front? |
Day 1 saw Jordan get the nod and was paired up with Matthew Cort as they claimed an impressive 5&4 victory, the only victory on Friday morning for GB&I. Jordan's next game was Saturday morning in the fourball matches and yet again he was paired with Matthew Cort...and yet another point on the board. | | Brothers in arms |
|
Heading into the Sunday Singles matches GB&I had a 10-6 lead after dominating Saturday's matches. Team USA kicked into gear for the final round, surrendering just 2 of the 10 points up for grabs and so claiming a 14-12 victory. Not the fairy tale ending Jordan would have hoped for his season but just to make the team is an awesome achievement and should be immensely proud of himself. |
| Congratulations on a fantastic season, Jordan |
