Pro Am Last Thursday was that time of year again where the cream of the crop PGA Professionals come to visit R&CPGC for the annual Pro-Am. We had 25 teams made up of R&CPGC members, their guests and of course a Professional.

| The calm before the storm!

The ProShop team were here at 6:30am making sure everything was ready to flow as seamlessly as possible and make any last minute finishing touches. The wind was pretty strong when we arrived and knew it was going to be a tough day. The players were starting to arrive by 8:00am and they were greeted by Chief Car Park attendant Terry Heaver upon entry, I mean that is enough to strike fear into anybody, so a bit of wind wasn't going to scare them now! The car park rapidly started to fill and the breakfasts were beginning to flow. The clubhouse was the hub of atmosphere with 100 golfers all chatting and devising their game plans for the day. Soon the plates would be empty and they would flock onto the driving range for the all important warm up. |
| Like a swarm of Locusts to the putting green! |
|
The bellies were full and the warm ups were done, now to head to the golf course... A shotgun start meant everybody had their own designated starting hole, some holes had 2 groups. This gave the players a chance to see what was in store for them, the wind had strengthened as the morning went on and the rough was brutal, any wayward shots were bound to be gobbled up and lost forever. Conditions were tough but the course was in fantastic condition; the fairways were like carpets and the greens were rolling like a marble staircase so putts from above the hole could make you look silly! The scores coming in from the Professionals was an indicator of how tough the course was playing, the best anybody could manage was 70, 1 under par which was from Ryan Boyns of The Weald of Kent GC.
|
| A superb -1 from Ryan in those conditions! |
| Tom Jordan, Langley Park GC, took second place. |
| Seasoned Peter Appleyard can still mix it with the kids to take third place. |
|
We had a tie at the top for the best team score with both teams scoring a very impressive 9 under par. After a countback it was decided that the team consisting of Steve Brooks, Dave Ballard, Terry Heaver & their Professional from Tilgate Forest Golf Centre, Ryan Fitzgerald would run out winners. The crowd knew what was coming as they saw Terry make a beeline for the microphone and rumour has it he is still giving his acceptance speech now!
|
| You can just see Terry scanning the room for the microphone! |

I would firstly like to thank all of the R&CPGC patrons that came out to support the event, we managed to increase the entry from last year's event. Thank you to Mandy Ellis who gave up her own time to not only fuel the golfers round the golf course from the hut but also prepare the food as well. Well done and thank you to Terry Heaver & Bob Hawker for making sure the car parking went as smoothly as possible. The course was in absolute superb condition and so I would also like to thank Danny and the green staff for working tirelessly to make this happen. Finally, thank you to Danny & Dale for a mouth watering breakfast and excellent dinner. I hope the same faces can play next year and some new faces if you couldn't make it this year, get the date in your diary for 2020!

| All smiles at this point...we must have had loads of beer left! |

The Open Championship Pro Am The final major is fast approaching and so to get you all in the mood for what promises to be an exciting Sunday afternoon on the links, we've organised a 9 hole Pro Am. On Sunday 21st July the attached Professionals of R&CPGC will be going head to head in a mini Pro Am. But they will need your help too... They will need 3 R&CPGC patrons to make up a team where the best 2 scores from 4 will count. You will get the chance to see our full time playing Professionals do what they do best round the back nine holes.

Once your team and your Professional have ripped up the golf course there will be a BBQ expertly prepared by Danny & Dale waiting for you with The Open playing on the big screen. Why not make a day of it and invite your family and friends up for the BBQ as well? We have 6 Professionals ready and waiting for you to make a team up with them, they are Jordan Godwin, Jack Colegate, Zak Morgan, Freddie Price, Rob Wills & myself. This will be a much smaller, intimate Pro Am designed to not only see how the boys play but to get to know them a bit more personally and what faces to look out for in the future. If you are interested in playing you can sign up via the ProShop now, entry will cost £30 per person which includes BBQ & prizes and if you would like to bring family and friends along for the BBQ they'll just have to pay £15 to cover their food. |
Bonus Ball The Gods must have been looking down on this week's lucky winner again as the man of the moment Lewis Brown has won yet another Bonus Ball, adding to his win from Captain's Prize AND his win from the Pro-Am! The luckiest man at R&CPGC bagged himself an accessory bundle, with enough to keep him going for the summer! This week's sheet is ready for entries so be sure to get your lucky number. |
Putting things right Sometimes, it's the most obvious things that get overlooked. When it comes to golf, the club most used in a round is a putter so surely it's the part of the game that deserves most attention? We know this isn't a reality for many, but a combination of working hard on your stroke and having a putter that is suited to your stroke type will certainly improve your chances on the greens - two things that this promotion is all about. |

Reading between the lines |
One of the hardest things in golf is green reading; it is also something that the majority of golfers never learn how to do properly. So, without giving away all the secrets, here are some handy tips to help keep you on track and hole more putts. |
High and low Prior to reaching the green, take note of the high and low points of the surface and where your ball lies in respect to these. This will help you to build a general picture before reaching your ball. 360 picture
If you’re struggling to read which way your putt breaks from behind the ball, try walking around to the other side of the hole as this can often highlight any breaks you may have missed or reaffirm your original read. Utilise our expertise
