The Claret Jug
Some of you may have been at R&CPGC on Monday to see we had a very special guest on site, the Claret Jug. England Golf held their meeting and golf at R&CPGC and so bought the Claret Jug with them as part of it's tour in the build up to The Open at Royal St. Georges. Many of you saw this as the perfect selfie opportunity, I mean when are you ever going to get the chance to stand next to the very same trophy all the greats have held down the years?
|
| I wonder if the R&A would let me use this as the trophy for the Pro Am? |

US Open Sweepstake
The penultimate major championship is fast approaching, the US Open at the glorious Pebble Beach Golf Links. So we thought it was about time we had another sweepstake! It's a very similar format to that of the Masters sweepstake...but with a twist. You still pick 4 players you think will do well or even win but this time you must pick ONE player from USA, ONE from Europe, ONE from Great Britain & Ireland and ONE player from the Rest of the World.
|
The person with the best aggregate score will see a massive boost made to their ProShop account and depending on entries we will spread the love as far down the leaderboard as we can! You'll be able to track your teams performance as we'll upload leaderboard on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and the final result on Monday. Entries cost £10 per team and you can pick your forms up from the ProShop today! Click here for the entry sheet.

Pro Am
The Pro Am train is building up steam, there's still 3 weeks until the main event and we've already got 21 teams confirmed! The support from the R&CPGC patrons has been unreal which we are very grateful for. However, we are still on the look out for 4 individual entries to complete some teams, if you fancy entering but don't know what it's all about read on... The day will kick off with a chance to meet your PGA Professional and quick briefing of your plan of action over some delightfully cooked breakfast. After breakfast and a quick warm up, you'll head to the golf course with your team led by the Professional. The next 4 hours you'll get the opportunity to see the Pro ply his trade, pick his brains about all manner of subjects and even receive some tips from them to improve your game. After golf and a cold refreshing pint of something, you and your team will sit down for an expertly prepared meal from Danny & Dale before, hopefully, collecting your prize! |
|
If prizes are not guaranteed, one definitely will be and that's you will have a fantastic day packed with fun and smiles and, who knows, a prize might just be waiting at the end of it for you. If you would like to enter come into the ProShop and we will fit you into one of the teams.

Knole Park Trophy
On Saturday 1st June our Junior Team took on the reigning champions Royal Blackheath in the first round of the Knole Park Trophy. The match got off to a steady start with the overall match level after 6 holes but the scores around the turn were looking shaky with Royal Blackheath leading in 4 of the 5 matches. The first two matches finished on 17 and 15, respectively, with a point going to both sides. At this time R&CPGC were down or level in the other three matches but a spirited fightback was on the cards for the boys and the next three matches were all turned around in R&CPGC’s favour resulting in a 4-1 victory.
|
A special mention to Matthew Darbinson, playing in his first match for the club. Matthew was 3 down at the turn and played some great golf on the back nine to win his match 2 up. R&CPGC will face either Sundridge Park or Sheerness at home in the next round |

On the Tour...
This week Alfie Plant was trying to qualify for next week's US Open at Pebble Beach, but first he had to show his class at Walton Heath GC, a familiar stomping ground for him, where he won the European Amateur Championship. Alfie had 36 holes to play in one day and his day kicked off on the New Course where he knocked it round in 3 under par where the highlight was an eagle on the par 5 13th hole. He would need at least a similar score in the afternoon on the tougher Old Course to have any chance of qualifying. Unfortunately, the occasion proved just too tough for Alfie and he could only manage a 3 over par 75 that afternoon whereas a score of 5 under par would have seen him jetting out to California. A level par finish isn't to be sniffed at as the courses would have been set up for tough tournament conditions, there were European Tour winners and even a Ryder Cup star finishing on worse scores! |
Half Term camp
The kids were off school last week for half term and so to give the parents a break Rob offered some coaching packed with key information and fun mini games, here's what happened... I had 4 of the R&CPGC young guns for some short game coaching for 2 hours split between chipping and putting. The first port of call was chipping where we were looking at how swing length can control the distance the ball travels. After a little bit of practice, the competition could begin! Two semi finals of Battleships, a game where the player who hits the cones 3 times first advances to the final to become the Battleships Champion. After some fun yet competitive matches Keiki Chapman came out on top, but who would become the putting champion? The putting segment was focusing on holing out those all important 4 foot putts and good pace control of lag putting. Again, split into pairs everybody got a go at each activity before putting them into practice in head to head matches, 3 hole Matchplay. |

Once again Keiki Chapman got to the final and once again she took the spoils and the clean sweep of victory! Well done to Keiki Chapman, Oliver Kelham, Ellie Phelps and Boris Shaw for taking on board all the tips and showing excellent etiquette throughout. |

Time for a little reflection |
Who doesn’t love the month of June? Long evenings, blistering sunshine (might be a little optimistic here) and plenty of opportunities to hit the course. With much of the season left to go and more competitions on the horizon, it’s time to take note of how you’ve been playing so far this year. |
Scenario 1 Hopefully, you've been playing regularly to your handicap or, better still, shooting under it. If that’s the case then happy days, keep up the good work! But we all know there’s room for improvement. Perhaps you don’t use a particular club as often as you could simply out of a lack of confidence with it? Or maybe you’re struggling with a destructive shot that is impacting your scores?
|
Scenario 2 On the other hand, you might be struggling to put a good score together no matter what you try. Some of you may be recalling a lesson you had from several years back or searching the web for a quick-fix only to be suffering further? Whether you’re in need of lessons, new equipment or a confidence boost, make sure you utilise our professional advice and skill set by speaking to a member of the team in-store. |
