Greetings from Warren Wood

Men's Invitation Day

Men's invitation day produced a very warm and friendly environment in which to play some golf.  The assembled crowd enjoyed great conditions and there were some hard fought four-balls in the Stableford competition.  Once play was completed it was down to the serious business of lunch and the socialising that makes these days so enjoyable.  Competition didn't ease however and there was a battle to see who would be the most sociable.  In the end it was too close to call with everyone holding their end up perfectly.

Golfing honours were revealed at the presentation with 3rd place going to Bob Tucker and his guest Andrew Crust from Littlestone Warren Golf Club; runners up with a fabulous 45 points were Scott Mutter and Ian Torkinton from Cuddington Golf Club, but the winners, on count back, were Steve Angus and his partner Richard Tinklin, this year's Captain at Sittingbourne Golf Club, with 'Ango' making a marvellous birdie up the last to steal the prize.

By the by, Dave Raymond won 'nearest the Pin' on 16 with a tee shot that finished so far away he needed a full wedge for his second and George Penhaligan won one of our TaylorMade SLDR drivers for a £5 raffle ticket .  Well played George!

Steward's Bowl

Early indications were it might be a challenge weather wise, but that didn't stop a full field assembling to do battle Saturday morning.  Against Shop advice, the early risers took to the course without purchasing a single brolly between them.  It wasn't 'til 11:23 that Dean Lanning very sensibly became the day's first customer, buying a very reasonably priced, not to say very well engineered, FootJoy umbrella!

Against all odds the rain held off long enough for the first competitors to complete bone dry.  Fourth group of the day, still unadulterated, contained John Barron, fresh from his victory in the Royal Scots Medal.  Not quite able to match his level par 71 of that day he contented himself with a 72, playing off the reduced handicap of 5 for a nett 67.  And so the wait began!

By 12:30 the sky was dark and leaden.
The wind was rising and the first spots of rain were falling; always with the members best interests at heart, the Pro Shop team sped to the rescue!

At this point John's 67 remained unchallenged and as things deteriorated it seemed unlikely it would be.  Steve MunnsWill Mather and Mark Sandy each posted 70, but no one was threatening much better.

By one o'clock it was a winters day and the first half dozen no-returns had been recorded.

Folk were looking forlorn as they entered scores into the system and sales of our new Premium Ranges of Waterproof Clothing were looking promising.

John BarronShortly the course was empty and folk were considering their wardrobe and the serious lack of appropriate outer wear.  Lucky we have just stocked up with everything you need!

Nothing came in late to better those early efforts, so for the second time in a fortnight it was John who triumphed.

With the standard scratch creeping up to 73 he's staring down the barrel of a 4 handicap.  It's tough to lose a third of your shots over a two week period,  but when you're on fire!

Great stuff John, but can you not give the others a chance?

Texas Scramble

Booking in for this regular favourite ran apace at the weekend, with take up of the morning tees particularly rapid.  By midday there were only two AM slots available, that was halved before one o'clock.  We now have a reserve list open.  The PM golfers take an altogether more laid back approach with no real pressure on proceedings.  For those still looking to play, booking is via the stud bar, internet, or the Pro Shop.  It's a shotgun start, 8:00 am and 12:45 pm.

Well done 'Old Chaps'!

Friday R&CPGC Vets won the KVGL County Team Trophy.  'What's that?' I hear you say, well I'll tell you!  Across the county there are several Vets Leagues, Group 1, Group 2,3, 4 etc.  This reflects the sheer number of golf clubs and the need to form manageable sized leagues.  At the end of each season the winners of all eight groups come together to contest a grand final and determine the County Champions.

This year the gathering occurred at West Kent Golf Club and having already won their division the lads rose admirably to the occasion; beating off challenges from clubs such as Royal Blackheath, Canterbury and Walmer & Kingsdown.  I hear from my correspondent that by far the stand out pair for 'Team R&CPGC' was Wingrove & Adams, with a better ball score of 43 points.  Thanks again for your input Dave.

Featured here the victorious team, Dave Wigrove, Derek Pettet, Peter Bobbett, Mick Adams, John Grace (not looking too well there John), Mark Ward and sitting down the poor dears, Mervyn White, Peter Goodsell, Alan Jenkins and Stuart Retour.

A Massive well done to the lads!!

Past Captain and former partner Keith Hills paired with Richard Suthers, a thorn in my side from last year's matches, to provide a stiff challenge.  Just how tough would it be........

A fast paced start by both sides ensued, through 6 holes the challengers were 2 under and worthy of a good lead.  Don't kid yourselves, they were on their knees in the wake of our heavy hitting and I was chirping as another 7&6 drubbing beckoned.  Dizzy and shaken, to their credit  Keith & Richard shook themselves, cleared their heads and mounted a comeback.

A valiant rear guard effort caused Steve & I occasional concern, but proved to be all for now't as we ran out 2&1.  Thus preserving our 100% record and ensuring a smug grin remains on my face.

As ever I've loved these matches, Steve has been a cracking partner and our opposition, to a man, have been great fun.  Thank you to each and every one of you.  I'm already looking forward to teaming up with Peter Goodsell next summer, when all those that tell me how they would have/could have taken us down, get a chance to step up to the plate.  Bring it on!

Conundrum

Last week’s question went right to the core of the matter.  Of the responses received pick of the crop came from Alan Harris and Denis Lloyd.  Our award though goes to Denis; despite his flagrant disregard for the R&A’s version of the rules at least he didn’t throw the towel in at the first opportunity and head for the 19th!

Alan had it thus: “If it is a 'prickly' pear do not go near it as it might take offence. If it is a 'blush' pear then you should find that embarrassing.  So, pick your ball up tear your card up and walk in as your round by now would have gone pear - shaped!!!!” Far more determined, Denis said:  “I would consult with the ‘bend the rules to suit me’ rule book. The book would state that the pear being a fruit would have a pip inside and with other fruits this is known as a stone (plums). You are allowed to remove stones from the bunker and you can't remove the stone without removing the whole pear. Job done!!!!!”

With this level of ingenuity I’m surprised standard scratch ever gets above 67!! The reality is that a pear is a natural object, when detached from a tree it becomes a loose impediment.  Being half eaten, or indeed, the distance to the nearest greengrocer’s makes not a jot of difference.  Nothing to do but play your ball as it lies.

Click here to share your thoughts on this week’s dilemma:

Approaching the eighteenth in a finely balanced final to this year’s Russell Foursomes, your partner accidentally moves the ball at address and incurs a penalty.  What happens next?!
