Royal Engineers Cup

Saturday brought the Royal Engineers Cup out for its annual airing and competition was fierce, though conditions clearly better suited division 1 golfers.

The best return from Division 2 and the only sub-par score was Graham Dunnachie with a 70. Division 1 however saw 10 players shoot par or better with several comfortably under the mark. A couple of 68's were bettered by Lee Bedford with a 67, but that still wasn't good enough to trouble the prizes.

Sometime leader and Club Captain Steve Howard had to settle for third, his 66 beaten on count back by Shaun Young. Round of the day though, with a gross 69 playing off 5, came from Ryan Godwin pictured above on the left, with a marvellous nett 64.

Almost Unbelievable!

On the back of our very successful FootJoy fitting day, for a limited period, any customer purchasing a pair of DryJoy Tour shoes, we will give, Absolutely FREE of charge, a DryJoy gustbuster umbrella retailing at £39.95!!

Now I don’t know how we do it, but we keep finding great value for you.

Autumn Meeting

Men’s Invitation

The entry list for this year's Men's Invitation is filling up fast. Thursday 2nd October is the date for what is a great opportunity to show off Rochester & Cobham Park Golf Club to your friends or business associates. Played as a better ball stableford over 18 holes, with dinner in the evening, it's a fun day to be part of and a good opportunity to meet other members.

Club Forum and Agronomist Presentation

Don't forget to clear a space in your diary for Monday 15th September. That's the date of the upcoming Club Forum, a time when members and board exchange views and discuss ideas and concerns.

This time round we have a visit from David Stanfield, the club's agronomist, which will include a presentation, followed by a question and answer session.

We are all capable of sitting in the bar posing questions that may never find an answer, this is our chance to give air to our thoughts and ideas.

The floor opens at 6:00 pm.

Our Pro Shop team were out testing Barry’s trial sand in the bunker front right of the practice short game area (old 12th green). First impressions were favourable with a more compacted base, less depth of loose sand and a cleaner strike through the ball. There is more work to do in terms of playability under different conditions, so please try it out and give us some feedback.

Warren, below on the left, shows why he’s the Pro, though Keith, below on the right consistently knocked it closer!

The trial sand is instantly easier on the eye, but that means little if it doesn’t make for a better bunker. The more people that offer feedback, the better placed the club will be to make a decision.

Sue Siddle (right) had no problem whatsoever splashing out to 2 feet with a deft touch.

Other news from Barry concerns over seeding of the tees, starting now, with top dressing once we switch to winter tees after the Autumn Meeting. Plus the rough cutting will start week commencing 22nd September, which will play havoc with our ball sales!

Barry also tells us that the Fairy Rings on some of the greens occur naturally and there is little we can do to lose them. They do however ‘grow out’ as we pass into autumn and over time will eventually grow bigger than the greens themselves and disappear from view.

Having completed the necessary maintenance work to the greens, ideally we could do with some rain to hasten the recovery. As we are looking at a spell of good weather and the possibility of an Indian summer, Barry has started watering the greens at night to encourage the process. Of course, sadly that’s never going to be as good as the real thing.

Kent Ladies Finals Day

This Sunday sees Rochester & Cobham Park host the Kent Ladies Finals Day. This is the culmination of Kent Ladies year where all the county knockout competitions are settled. Sadly this year we are not represented, though no doubt with a little help from Warren it will be an R&C clean sweep next year!

Jack Colegate's pursuit of a full card for next year's Challenge Tour faltered last week, as he was forced to withdraw from the EuroPro Tour's penultimate event. With just the end of season Visit Egypt Tour Championship at El Gouna to come, a return to fitness and a good finish could still see his goal achieved.

This week saw Jack at Frilford Heath for first stage of European Tour Qualifying School. After a very promising start with rounds of 69 & 70, sadly his form left him and a 75, 76, finish saw him miss the cut by 4 shots.

The return to form of Matt Haines continued last week as he put together 4 rounds in the 60s to finish in a share of 33rd place, picking up over £1000 for his efforts. After a week off this week the Challenge Tour heads to Kazakhstan and the 3rd biggest prize fund of its season. It might take a few quid to persuade me to travel there too!

Matt
won't be there either as he's off to Tour School that week. Tour School is the biggest event in any Pro's calendar as they strive to make that step up, so good luck Matt, hope the good form continues.
