Greetings from Warren Wood

No Hiding Place

Saturday witnessed the annual battle between left and right handers. Being that the lefties are outnumbered around 20:1, it’s hardly a fair contest. Not content with this outrageous advantage John Ribbins pulled out all the stops. Firstly he connived with Warren to ensure Mike Bush and Keith Pearce were otherwise engaged on the day, and then he assembled a team of heartless bounders, making their intention to grind the gentle lefties to paste abundantly clear.

Despite this blatant intimidation, morning coffee and pleasantries passed without incident. Bonding complete, the teams made their way first to the practice area for intensive warm up and then to the first tee to commence battle.

Competition was instantly intense, with holes changing hands often and in both directions and after much endeavour from both sides, things finally approached the 18th. Early signs suggested the lefties had risen above shameless bully tactics, halving two and winning one of the first three matches across the line. Sadly it was not to be, as the sheer weight of the right handers (there were some big lads among them!) laid heavily on the back of the field. All three of the remaining games went to the righties and they ran out 4 -2 winners.

On the left, as it were, are John Grace & John Irvine, about to do battle with Eamon & Bernie Mullins and then some while later, a victorious John Irvine arrives at the 18th green with Eamon.

After the match a light lunch was taken and new friendships were forged. Thanks to all that took part, the spirit of the day was fantastic.

PING Demo & FootJoy Fitting Days

Just to hamper the lefties' chances Warren arranged these two events to clash with the match. Both were very well supported and thank you to all those that found time to make use of these marvellous free services. The G30 range has proved a big winner with just about everyone that’s tried them and it won plenty of new converts with Warren and Morgan from PING matching the right club to the individual.

On the right is Morgan taking Doug Harding through his fitting. Doug, a member at Sene Valley, travelled from Folkestone for the experience and placed his order without hesitation.

I’ve no idea what Warren was up to in the background!

James Monk, seen on the right here with shoe connoisseur Keith Dorey, provided one of the best experiences imaginable. His knowledge and enthusiasm blended together to make the 20 minute fitting fly by and, as suggested beforehand, almost everyone is wearing the wrong size shoe.

Of the Pro Shop Team, only Jerry was close, being possibly half a size bigger than she has been wearing. Keith & Mike both came up a full size smaller, with Mike looking at a wider shoe, but Warren took the honours for being the biggest mover, coming down one and a half sizes, whilst going to an extra wide fit.

We are hoping to secure another FootJoy day in the spring and can’t speak highly enough of the value of this free service. If you were unable to come along this time, do try to make room when the opportunity next presents itself. You certainly wouldn’t be disappointed.

Don’t be hesitant, anyone interested in joining the fun need only talk to Mandy Ellis, or ask in the Shop. It’s never beyond us to find you a partner.

Join the pro shop team

There’s still a chance to join us as we set about clearing the range balls nesting in the rough around the driving range.

There's a FREE range card worth £22.50 + a FREE beer and crisps on offer to all volunteers that join in the fun (tea and coffee also available).

Depending upon people's availability we are looking to do this either Friday 12th September, or Saturday 13th September, between 3:00 pm and 5:30 pm. If you like the idea of enjoying our generosity, or if you just fancy joining in for what is bound to be a good laugh, please put your name forward in the Shop.

Club forum

Monday 15th September
is one for the diary. That's the date of the upcoming Club Forum, where members and board take time out to exchange views and discuss ideas and concerns. If you have a view on something you'd like to share with the club, this is the place to give it air.

The Challenge Tour this week saw Matt Haines travel to Galgorm Castle in Ballymena for the Northern Ireland Open Challenge. Matt has felt he’d been playing well in recent weeks without bearing much fruit, but this week saw a return to form, helped by a 3rd round 65, for a share of 17th place and a welcome pay day.

The efforts of Jack Colegate to secure a Challenge Tour card for next year suffered a knock, as his first round +4 led to an untimely missed cut. With the EuroPro Tour staging this year’s penultimate event this week, Jack remains within touching distance of his prize. Fingers crossed.
