Srixon product launch Last week Rob took a trip across the border into St. Andrews to check out all of the Srixon clubs that are due for release on Friday 14th September. Here's how he got on... When I was told I was going on an all expenses paid trip to St. Andrews courtesy of Srixon to take a look at their new gear, I thought all my Christmas' had come at once! Staying at the Fairmont Hotel, we were talked through the latest drivers, woods, hybrids, irons from Srixon and new wedges from Cleveland, which was my favourite part. Sitting in one of the conference rooms with us was multiple European Tour winner Soren Kjeldsen & 2 time Ryder Cup winner Peter Hanson, listening to their experiences and thoughts around the game was very interesting!

| There's some stories between these two! |

After the theory part of the day came the practical part...hitting the clubs on the range! In true Scottish fashion, the winds picked up and the heavens opened but that wasn't about to stop me test driving the clubs, I spent most of the time with the wedges, in particular the new lob wedges! Day two consisted of us taking the new clubs to the course in a fun & relaxed Texas Scramble and the biggest thing that stood out was how easy these clubs are to hit, even when I put one of the bad swings on them! There was even Beat the Pro Challenge with Soren & Peter, with the prize being a Cleveland wedge...I don't like to brag but I did take down Peter Hanson but let Soren slip through the net! [insert Rob & Peter, captioned 'Defeating Ryder Cup winners for fun!'][insert Rob & Soren, captioned 'You got lucky this time Soren'!']

Staysure PGA Seniors Championship Pro Am Last Wednesday, our Club Manager John, was showing off his golfing skills, at the London Club, to none other than Mark McNulty, when he was paired in his team at the Seniors Pro Am. Mark gave John a few much needed tips on putting. While John showed Mark how to snap hook, hit it low and left and how to hit a 50 yard chip two feet. Despite all that, John still managed to par 9 holes, alas no birdies and the team finished with a credible 85 points. That said it was a great day and John even got Mark to sign and pose, with a Rochester & Cobham hat.

Monthly Medal & Burden Trophy Last Saturday we had 132 R&CPGC members hit the links to try and become the Monthly Medal & Burden Trophy champion. Here's how they got on... The best of the pile from Division 2 was Terry Heaver with a skilful nett 69 to claim a 1 shot victory over his compatriots from his division. However, this wasn't quite good enough to claim top spot overall! That accolade goes to long standing member & somebody who knows R&CPGC like the back of his hand, Geoff Crockford. Geoff had a superb nett 67 which he posted early on n the day as he was one of the first out. Geoff got his handicap slashed 1.2 leaving playing off 10 but perilously close to dropping back into single figure handicap as he currently sits on 9.6. Well played Geoff!

When tour pros are playing in big events, like the PGA Championship this week, they’ll always have relatively new wedges in their bag to maximise their spin, because worn wedges mean less control.
|
| Why do grooves matter? The grooves are the sole contact point between your ball and the club, imparting backspin to help lift the ball into the air. R&D testing has revealed that after 125 rounds, wedges spin 2,000rpm less than wedges with new grooves and consequently roll 14 feet further on landing - which is huge. What causes wear? All grooves will wear slowly over time due to a number of factors, including gradual wear from play, but golf's equipment manufacturers work hard to limit this. |
| Need to upgrade? Grooves are particularly important on wedges, where pinpoint control is crucial. If yours are looking worn like on the first image above, why not consider the Callaway Mack Daddy 4 wedge, which has Groove-in-Groove technology. This design sees the main grooves horizontally milled and saw-cut to remain just within legal tolerances. An extra ‘Nip-It’ groove near the leading edge gives you further control, especially on shorter shots, while in-between each main groove are milled, raised micro-ridges that increase spin even more.
