The King Is Dead, Long Live The King!
Club Championship
As this glorious period of weather continues, Sunday proved to be another perfect day for golf. This year the draw numbered 66 eager contestants and the club was buzzing from the off. As the early starters came in it became obvious conditions were testing, but most had dug deep and scores whilst not outstanding were certainly respectable.
The Scratch Medal saw 4 players return with a 73, Dibran Zeqiri, Will Richardson, Ollie Hawker and defending Champion Marcus Sewell. Dave Link with 74 remained well in contention, as did Captain’s Prize winner Robert Osmond with a 75. The Winch Gold Medal remained wide open with Dibran’s nett 68 leading the way, but over 20 stood within 6 shots going into the afternoon.
Fed, watered and loaded with supplies, folk headed out with plans to consolidate or attack depending on their am score. Once again conditions didn’t give up easy low numbers, but again returns were steady.
Henry Saunders and Michael Puddy both made a good attempt at bridging the gap they’d left with a pair of 72s, sadly, both had left a little too much out on the course in the morning and had to content themselves with second for Henry and third for Michael in the scratch, with positions reversed in the Winch. Adam Carnell produced the low round of the day with a level par 71, though his morning's work had written him out of the equation.
Having been 2 off the pace at the start a nett 69 in the afternoon, for a total of 139, gave a convincing 4 stroke Winch Gold Medal victory to Naz Gill. I guess that’s the dividend drawn from buying a years coaching from yours truly!
In the Club Championship, only one of the morning’s leaders had enough gas in the tank to keep it going. After a marvellous one over par 72 to add to his earlier 73, winner by a three shot margin was defending champion Marcus Sewell.
Well done to all those that took part, fantastic to see this great tradition again being so well supported; also, a special well done to Naz and Marcus in acknowledgement of their endeavours.
The Major Roll Out Rolls On
As I type, our US PGA sweepstake is set to ignite. Entries have been strong and I thank you all once again for your continued support. Prizes will go to the top five entries and ties, monies being credited to Pro Shop accounts. An upto date list of all entries is available here and the leaderboard will be published on the club website each morning.
We are also all ready for the second in our series of ‘Major Championships’. This time round it’s wedge play going under the spotlight and we’ll be set up on the range Saturday 9th August from 10 am - 12 pm and then again from 4 pm - 5 pm with a cracking test to suit all standards of golfer. Come along and take the challenge, earn yourself the title of ‘US PGA Champion’ and bragging rights as the club’s ‘Short Game Wizard’ for twelve months. Let’s not give Terry Watts a clear run at his ‘Grand Slam’ assault. He’s already a crowin’, if he wins again he’ll be insufferable! Or rather, more insufferable!
Alongside the Claret Jug now stands our Wanamaker Trophy, just waiting to have your name added to the honours board. For just £1 per go not only can you win the title and all that entails, you will also walk away with a fantastic Titleist Vokey wedge. It’s too good to miss.
August Product Festival
August 30th sees us hosting two fantastic fitting days
FootJoy fitter James Monk is on site providing a professional shoe fitting service. James has years of experience and is offering 20 minute slots available between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, during which he will measure your feet correctly and advise the perfect shoe for you.
Limited slots available, so book early!
On the same day, Morgan Darnell from PING will be here showcasing their brand new G30 range. This is one of the most exciting club launches for some time, these clubs are a step change from what has gone before.
As with the FootJoy offer, slots are available on a first come first served basis, so drop in and reserve your spot ASAP.
Not only are these clubs destined to improve many peoples scores, to my eye they're as good looking a club as PING have ever produced.
We now have the range in stock, so come take a look and try them out with one of our own demo models.
And still it goes on!
I've been successful in my efforts to secure the kit for 2 weeks, so between Monday 11th August and Friday 22nd August we have a full TaylorMade Demo Pack on site. This will include ladies as well as men's clubs, stiff, regular an M flex shafts for the more leisurely among our ranks. As comprehensive a range of TaylorMade clubs you will ever get the opportunity to swing. Try them on the range or out on the course.
At the same time FlightScope is back in the shop and available until the end of September. This is such a great asset for club fittings and lessons. Don't miss out, don't forget to book early.
Click here to book, or speak to us in the pro shop.
Matt Haines came back for a few days break and teed it up on home turf in the Stock Exchange Pro-Am here at Cobham. It proved a worthwhile visit for Matt as he won the day and the £400 first prize.
Meanwhile Jack Colegate was in action at the the Walk in My Shoes Open at Mount Wolseley G&CC. A tough fought 75 first round was followed by an impressive 67 on day two, putting him in a strong position going into the final day. Sadly the big push didn't come and a last round 74 gave Jack a share of 32nd and £285 .
Bank Holiday Mixed
It was going to be a Soft Shoe Shuffle
Following last week's glaring error, one of our sub editors has been dispatched to the salt mines. Of course the Bank Holiday Monday falls on 25th August. That mistake, coupled with a full to overflowing diary has sadly led to this competition being cancelled. :(
Don't despair though, there's an EMG on Friday 23rd August. Bookings for this are via the sheet on the Mixed Section notice board.
Party in the Park
Don't miss out on one of the great occasions in the club diary. Party in the Park is on the 16th August; it kicks off at 4:00 pm and runs 'til late. Prices for the day are as follows; adults £12.50 and children £2.50 .
Contact Paula and her team to book your pitch, it's a night not to miss!
