“Best putter in the Club”
The R&CPGC Open Champion
Sunday witnessed the inauguration of this event, where members did battle for the Claret Jug and the honour of being crowned our very own “Open Champion”; plus bragging rights as the “Best Putter in the Club”. Over the next twelve months we intend launching the complete series of major championships, each based on a different skill set. So look out for the US PGA, it’s not that far away!
Over 60 competitors made up the field for our launch event, all vying to be the first name on our honours board. Can you afford to miss out on the kudos that will come with such a prestigious victory? Each champion will have their photo displayed for the year and a spot for evermore on the Pro Shop’s “Roll of Honour”.
Conditions for this week’s event were certainly testing as early starters found the correct combination of line and pace elusive. One exception was Andrew Todd; his effort to 440 mm threw down an early marker that stood up well for a good while. Eventually Naz Gill rolled one in to a very impressive 212 mm, a mark that would surely stand to the end, this to the frustration of Bob Florence who immediately beat Andrew’s mark with a 428 mm effort.
Competition remained fierce with several folk falling just short. John Beslee was unlucky with an effort that fell afoul of the rules, though if it hadn’t hit the marker it might not have held the green. As the end drew near, a late charge came from Matt Carpenter as he stole in with a 185 mm, no one was going to better that. Not so hasty!
Up steps Terry Watts with a majestic roll that cozied down to 85 mm and the battle was over. Spirits were broken, Watts was jubilant and McIlroy nowhere to be seen.
“Open Champion” Terry Watts. Yes, he really is that small!!
What a Popping Time!
Meanwhile Saturday and Sunday witnessed members cleaning up in the shop with no more effort involved than popping a balloon! Among those taking advantage of our outrageous generosity was Gordon Harris.
Discounts of between 5% & 50% were on offer, don't miss out come 2015!
Open Championship Sweepstake
Our Open Championship Sweepstake proved to be a very popular event and Thursday saw tears aplenty as members watched their picks disappear from sight.
Not everyone was displeased though with Gary Chatfield going to bed Friday night dreaming of his new set of PING Anser Irons. As the weekend unfolded it became less and less likely he would lose his grip on them, though Ray Pooley with Ricky Fowler and Steve Thouless with Sergio Garcia might have wished he had.

PING Demo Day
See how Bubba-long, just got Bubba-longer
Following the announcement of their exciting new G30 range, PING will be showcasing their new product in a special launch event at R&CPGC on Saturday 30th August.
"Crown turbulators in the 460cc head help generate greater clubhead speed and ball velocity for consistently longer drives that find the fairway. The new T9S face material is strong, lightweight and thin, optimizing face deflection for even higher ball speeds and longer drives. With Trajectory Tuning+ Technology, you can fine-tune launch conditions using five settings and 2 full degrees of loft adjustability."
Don't take our word for it listen to what 'Bubba' has to say. A must watch video, even if the wind tunnel demo doesn't impress you, listening to Bubba will certainly make you smile… It brightened up my morning!

Course update
Barry and the team have been busy banging in sighting posts in the rough. These posts provide a useful reference point when one of those oh so rare miscues finds its way off line. The idea is to make it easier to find the little beggars and keep the game moving.
Matt Haines was in Switzerland last week for the Challenge Tour's Swiss Challenge. After a 2 over first round of 73, his battling 69 on day 2 saw him miss the cut by 1 shot.
Meanwhile Jack Colegate continued his recent good form on the EuroPro Tour. Playing The Simpson & Marwick Championship, rounds of 65, 66 & 71 saw Jack earn a share of fourth place and added £1550 to his prize fund as he tries to secure a Challenge Tour card for next year.
Sky Sports coverage is a real possibility for member Bernie Mullins. We have another star to keep an eye on as Bernie made it through his Pre-Championship Qualifier to secure a spot in the International Grand Final taking place at Marriott St. Pierre on 21st August. Well done Bernie and good luck for the final. Hope the camera catches your good side and there are plenty of birdies in your game!
