Captain's Prize Weekend
Survival of the fittest!
Friday night and it didn’t look good. Carol Kirkwood was forecasting fire & brimstone and some old fella was building a boat. Folk turned up expecting the worst, umbrella sales in the shop reached record levels, expectations were low and we learnt yet again that the Met Office are just sticking pins in maps, what a glorious day!
Early returns suggested conditions were tough. From the first 22 groups, Dr John Grace alone managed to break par with an impressive 38 points. His score continued to top the list well into the evening, with only 4 people carding 37 points up to tea time. It was well past five o’clock before Jason Stuart topped John’s effort with a haul of 39 points, only to see his own score overhauled as dusk drew close. Rob Osmond, last off the course, posting a fantastic 41 points.
Saturday’s leaderboard:
- Rob Osmond
- Jason Stuart
- Dr John Grace
- Paul Reynolds
- Ollie Hawker
Sunday brought another day of fine weather and another day where scores were hard earned. Saturday had seen 8 players score 37 points or more, Sunday produced only 3. Terry Wickham and Darren Yearley managed to match par, whilst Dave Grout and Steve Thouless both carded 37. Late on the rain finally arrived, but it did nothing to halt the march of star of the show, Rob Osmond. It’s a rare event when the same player tops the scoreboard both days, a marvellous effort by any standard.
Another double was achieved by Ollie Hawker, as he managed to win the longest drive both days. Whilst Gary Carter made a dent in Saturday’s twos sweep with a Hole in One at the 11th, picking up a very healthy £73 for his troubles.
Sunday’s leaderboard:
- Rob Osmond
- Steve Thouless
- Dave Grout
- Terry Wickham
- Darren Yearly
A big vote of thanks to Captain Steve and his team of volunteers, Maggie Gill, Jeff Wakelin, Sue Siddle, Liz Jardine and Jo Beslee.

Know your distances
Bushnell Tour v3 JOLT
"With its award-winning PinSeeker with JOLT Technology, the Tour V3 JOLT sets the standard for being the complete laser rangefinder package. JOLT Technology eliminates all doubt by delivering short vibrating bursts to reinforce the laser has locked onto the flag. Use what the Pros use, feel the exact distance... FEEL THE JOLT."
As club golfers we waste so many shots because we don't know how far we need to hit the ball and even when we do, we don't know which club hits it that far. This piece of kit is such a fantastic asset. Take the uncertainty out of every shot and swing with the confidence of knowing you have the correct club in hand.
South East Association
Following on from last week's success in the Sundridge Park Trophy, this week saw the club's Wilding Cole side play host to Eltham Warren. A keenly contested battle eventually fell in the clubs favour, a tight 4 ½ - 3 ½ victory for Ronnie Little's side. There were wins for Mark Sandy, Mark Ward, Tony Hastings and Paul Jarman. Whilst Steve Bright's ½ carried the day.
Colegate 2nd at Frilford Heath!
Our EuroPro Tour player Jack Colegate finished 2nd last week in the Buildbase Open on the EuroPro Tour, taking home £5000. His 54 hole score of -11 was only one short of tying with the tournament winner James Robinson.
Colegate and Robinson teed it up together for the final round and they both exchanged the lead several times in the afternoon, but a birdie at the 14th followed by an eagle 3 at the 15th saw Robinson pull two shots ahead for the first time in the final round. Both players then parred the 16th and 17th, meaning Jack had two shots to make up on the final hole. Robinson bogeyed the last but Jack could only manage a par 4, leaving Robinson to pick up the title.
This is Jack’s best result on the EuroPro to date. He is now in 7th spot on the Order of Merit, with only nine tournaments left this season, and the top 5 players at the end of the season will earn a Challenge Tour Card for the 2015 season. To keep up with Jack's progress please use this link:

Haines 47th in Scottish Hydro Challenge
Matt Haines seemed to find form all but too late last week in the Scottish Hydro Challenge event on the Challenge Tour. A final round 66, the 5th lowest of the day, shot him 15 places up the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 47th place. After making the cut on the mark at -3, Matt had a poor 3rd round of 75 to put him at the foot of the leaderboard. He travels to Germany this week to play the Aegean Airline Challenge Tour event, so let's hope that final round form continues. To follow Matt's progress this week please use the following link:

Coaching In the 21st Century - Putting lesson and fitting days
Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July sees the introduction of another step forward. A one hour slot for £40 offers a putting lesson plus a putter fitting using the iPING fitting app and the SkyPro system. We play more shots with our putter than any other club, it's too important to be left to chance.
Members that have taken the experience have enjoyed understanding their putting stroke, noticed improvement in their technique and seen how the right putter for their style makes such a difference.
We now have an extensive range of putters in stock, one to suit all styles.
The photo features Michael Breed, 2012 PGA Teacher of the Year, using the SkyPro system.
A 10% improvement in your number of putts per round would likely mean a three shot improvement to your handicap.
It’s there waiting for you.
