Maclean Cup & Henderson Salver
Quarter of a century!
36 holes in one day is a rare event among Kent's lady golfers, but that's what Tuesday witnessed at Cobham. Mary Maclean, a former Vice President and mother to our own Janet Batchelor, inaugurated her Cup 25 years ago. Mary always produced tea and cake for the competitors after their endeavours, a tradition carried on to this day by Janet.
A scratch medal, the competition this year witnessed its biggest field to date. Jo Beslee attended her son Charlie's wedding over the weekend, in the wilds of 'up north', yet dragged herself to the tee and having positioned herself well in the morning went on to produce an afternoon round that was just too good. Sheila Grant finished 2 shots off the pace in second, with Karen Sinden a further 3 back in third.
The Henderson Salver, a slightly later addition to the calendar is awarded to the lowest nett score. The efforts of Jo and Sheila this time gave best to Karen who returned a fantastic total of 152.
Ruth Henderson, now 97, was unable to attend and present the prizes, but her place was ably taken by Mary's sister Helen Walliker, herself a club Vice President.
It almost goes without saying that both winners are students of Warren. Almost!
A big 'WELL DONE!' to all those that took part.
Picking up the pace!
Stimpmeter news
A couple of weeks after our last report and three weeks post maintenance, Saturday recorded 9.3 on the stimpmeter. That's against 8.8 previously.
Bunker news
Bunkers on 14, 13 and 12 are undergoing maintenance this week to break up any compacted sand.
Buggy hire
Our stable of buggies is seeing more and more use as the year blossoms. Members can pre book these at £10 per round and if you're minded to do so it's worth getting in early. It's not uncommon of late for the complete stock to be out and we feel your pain when disappointment looms.
Pro Am Update
Record breaker signs in
Richard Wallis is gracing this year's Pro-Am, teaming up with club members Mark Powell, Anthony Harwood and their guest Guy Mayo.
Richard was recently been written into the Guinness Book of World Records, having recorded the lowest ever under par score in a professional tournament. His 59 matched the feat of a select group, but was achieved on a par 73 course. The resulting 14 under par(!!!) stands alone, a unique achievement.

Advertise your company name on the day
This year's Pro Am is a great opportunity to advertise a bit about your company with over 150 competitors and many more supporters visiting our club during the day. Please email Warren at warren_wood@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
Photography
Professional photographer and Rochester and Cobham member Dan Pullen will be attending the Pro Am. Dan's recent clients include Today's Golfer magazine, so he'll be perfectly poised to capture you looking like a tour pro. Prints can be bought on the day for £5, so make sure you look smart and have practiced your 'just nailed it poised' pose.
A vote of thanks
From a standing start last year we produced a field of 35 teams. This year we set ourselves a target of 38 teams, as it stands we have 41.
Member Mark Lee has taken the 42nd spot with VIP status and is looking for two other members to make up his team. I'm sure the spaces won't remain vacant for long, so if you're that person ring us, call in at the Pro Shop ASAP or click here and let us know.
None of this can happen without you guys though and your support is very much appreciated. Here's to another top day of keen competition and great fun. May the sun shine and your team win!
South East Association
This week saw two club sides do battle in their annual knockouts. In the Sundridge Park Trophy, the five and overs recorded a fine 6 - 2 home win against Dartford G.C. Derek Pettet led the way with an emphatic 8&6 demolition of his man, much to the delight of team captain Terry Watts.
Gordon Harris' West Kent Trophy side visited Shooters Hill G.C. and sadly felt the other kind of emotion. Despite the best efforts of our Club Manager, a 4&3 victor, it was a 6 ½ - 1 ½ reversal.
Captain's Prize
There are still a few tee times available for Saturday between 1:00 and 2:00 pm. Sunday has odd slots free throughout the day. It's £10 to enter and there are prizes for both days, as well as the overall.
Colegate just outside top 20

Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters
Over the weekend a couple of our juniors were competing over at Nizels GC in the Junior Masters.
In the boys category Marcus Sewell finished a very impressive 2nd on 9 under par! However the winner stormed home on a hugely impressive 15 under par! Also from Rochester & Cobham was new member Bobby Twiner, who finished in 21st place on +2.
In the girls category Mollie Lawrence finished in 4th place with a 72 hole score of +3, 9 shots behind the eventual winner. Mollie has now improved her handicap to 0.9, the lowest she has ever been. Very impressive considering at the start of the year Mollie was off 2.6!

Coaching In the 21st Century - Putting lesson and fitting days
Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th July sees the introduction of another step forward. A one hour slot for £40 offers a putting lesson plus a putter fitting using the iPING fitting app and the SkyPro system. We play more shots with our putter than any other club, it's too important to be left to chance.
Earlier on in the week I used the iPING fitting software with Andrew Brice and from the data we collected in session 1 (see picture below) we were able identify that his current putter was working against his desired stroke arc. The putter Andrew was using was designed for a straight arc stroke (a straight back and through stroke) and from the image it clearly shows a strong arc putter would best suit his putting style. After making a small alignment change and fitting Andrew to the correct putter you'll see in session 2 the data improved considerably. The putting consistency moved from 11 to 1.9.
