Hello everyone,
Kent Amateur Championships Last weekend R&CPGC was being represented by 6 of its members; Mike Bush, Rob Osmond, Bob Florence, Ryan Godwin, Shaun Macklin & George Crow. The tournament started on Friday with 36 holes of stroke play where the top 16 players would go through to the matchplay knockout over the weekend.
Once again, R&CPGC was represented in the knockout stages with both Mike Bush & Rob Osmond coming in the top 16! The players were then seeded based on where they came and it just so worked out that Mike & Rob would play each other in the quarter-final.
Mike came out on top in the battle of R&CPGC and would then go on to play Mark Collins from Littlestone GC but unfortunately would go on to lose 1 down. However Mike can take the positives out of his loss in that he lost to the eventual winner and took Mark the furthest on his way to victory.
Alongside the main event, there was also a team event where the top 3 scores from each golf club would go on to represent Kent in the National Finals at East Devon Golf Club in September. So with Mike Bush, Rob Osmond & Bob Florence's combined scores R&CPGC lifted the team trophy! Well done lads and we'll keep you posted on how they get on later in the year.
Oakleigh Cup Last Saturday we had the Oakleigh Cup, one of the few competitions where the members get their playing partners and tee times designated to them. In previous years the entry level hasn't been as high as the usual competitions but this year was different with 122 golfers taking part which is a 15% increase on last year and a whopping 30% increase on 2015. Here's how the guys got on...
The best of the bunch in Division 2 was Terry Bennett who come in with a respectable 37 points, a round where he came out the blocks rapidly with 20 points on the front 9 and more steadier back 9 of 17 points. Although I'm sure Terry will put his performance down to skill, I think it's just a bit too coincidental that his sudden turn in form has come just as he's treated himself to the brand new Callaway Epic driver!
The winner of the Oakleigh Cup has come from Division 1 in the form of Neil Butcher who knocked in a whopping 41 points playing off a 5 handicap which would be equivalent to level par in stroke play, great golf Neil!
His round didn't get off to the best of a starts with a 0 pointer but he kicked into fifth gear from then onwards with 21 points on the front 9. Neil didn't take his foot off the gas, he wanted to get his name in gold leaf which he proved with a 20 point back 9 to take a 2 point victory.
Neil's handicap took a mighty 0.7 slash but on the bright side he did make a birdie 2 which will add to his winnings and make his ProShop account look healthy. Well done Neil!
R&CPGC Par 3 Championship The US Open is ready to get underway next week and so that can only mean 1 thing, the return of the R&CPGC Par 3 Championship! A new addition to the Blue Tee Series which was only added 2 years ago and has proved to be a big hit each time!
On Friday 16th June at 5:30pm we will be doing it all again, the front 9 will be transformed for just one evening into a fun quirky little par 3 course where you will be faced with shots you wouldn't even think were imaginable...well for most of you anyway!
In previous years we've played from the 1st hole blue tee into the 3rd green, we've also had a tee next to the 5th men's tee to the 4th green (yes, that does involve hitting over or under the trees next to the green) which actually yielded a hole in one last year from Bernie Mullins!
I think the trickiest shot we've had before was from the top of the pitching area to the 7th green...with danger looming all around the green this is definitely not one for the feint hearted!
Once your nerves have recovered from the action on the golf course you will head into the clubhouse for the presentation where the winners will receive some USA inspired prizes which they must wear for the duration of the evening, don't worry it's nothing too embarrassing. We finally settle down with some delicious dinner whilst watching the US Open on the big screen.
So if you're at a loose end and fancy some fun in the sun (hopefully) then let us know in the ProShop, entry will cost £12 which will include food and prizes. You can enter as a team of 4 or individually and we can always find you a team.
Pro-Am In just a matter of 3 weeks the best of the best PGA Professionals will be coming to R&CPGC to do battle in the annual Pro-Am on Thursday 29th June. If you would like to see how they ply their trade then why not enter as a team to play alongside them. The PGA Professionals will be more than happy to give you hints and tips on how you can maybe improve your game.
As an R&CPGC member's team it will cost £270, just £90 per person this will include breakfast, 18 holes with a PGA Professional & carvery dinner after play as well as prizes if you bring your A game that is!
We also have a VIP package where for a small increase in price you can get so much more!
