Hello golfers,
This weekend we had
2 competitions and once again an opportunity for somebody to get their name on the
Honour Boards. First up was the
Darnley Challenge Cup on Saturday, here is how the
R&CPGC faithful got on:
Darnley Challenge Cup On what was a pleasant spring day we had
145 members trying to earn them an early season invitation to the
Prize Giving Dinner. The best of the bunch in
Division 2 was
Mark Donovan who returned home with
38 points but sadly finished with
0 points on the last hole. Would that prove costly for the final result, we'll have to wait and see?
Mark works tirelessly on his game during the week and has also been working with
Rob to get his handicap down to where they both believe it belongs. His hard work certainly paid dividends this week and a cut of
1.2 gets his handicap closer to his target!
The best in
Division 1 and the
Darnley Challenge Cup winner was
Will Clarke who scored a cracking
40 points playing off 5.
Will's front 9 was a very steady
18 points but the thrusters were kicked into over drive in the second half and an impressive
22 points, 1 under par, back 9 was enough for
Will to secure victory!
Another big story of the weekend was
Danny Gibbons' radar like golf game seeking the bottom of the cup at the
16th in just
1 shot! Danny's extraordinary shot earned him
£66, taking half of the twos pot in the process. Probably not quite enough to outweigh the deficit at the bar, I'm sure!
Monthly Medal Winners Shield
The second of the competitions was a far more exclusive field of just
14 players consisting of the
Monthly Medal Winners from
2016/17. The perfect opportunity for the guys to prove their win wasn't just a stroke of luck and more like a stroke of genius.
The masterful tactician was
Dean Lanning who sits atop of the tree with a respectable
nett 73 to take victory by
1 shot from
Andy Boorman who sits alone in second place.
Dean has also now booked his place in the history books and can speak about his accomplishment for years to come with the evidence up in gold leaf!
Captain & Professional Match
Terry and I had our second
Captain & Professional match of the season against the formidable pairing of
Martin Pegg and Mark Ward on what felt like a winter's day.
This would be
Terry's third consecutive day of golf and the previous
2 days took their toll on the old boy's body, meaning I would have to carry him through another match. The only problem this time was my shoulder was giving me grief, so only
God knows how that would cope as well as having Terry on their as well!
Things were going well and according to plan as
Terry and I found ourselves leading for
12 holes but things quickly turned around as
Mark's consistent play clawed the game back.
Martin and Mark dovetailed superbly and were strong enough to claim an infamous victory. Although I'm not sure how much pride they can take from beating two injured golfers!
I think the loss of the unbeaten record needs a stewards enquiry too because technically the match was played outside of the official
Captain & Professional match times making it an unofficial win. Nonetheless, well done to
Martin & Mark!
Pro-Am
There are just
8 weeks until the biggest and best day at
R&CPGC, the
Pro-Am on
Thursday 29th June. Typically a fun day out for all involved whether that be the amateurs playing for the first time, the diehards that play every year, or the
PGA Professionals. But what does the day entail?
When we organise the Pro-Am every year we always seem to attract the best
PGA Professionals from the
South Region which only adds to the pleasurable experience for the
R&CPGC members. All the
PGA Professionals who play are always extremely approachable and happy to give their team hints and tips that could help their game or are more than happy to talk through their approach to a shot or even a round.
Once all the teams are back in after all the fun on the course,
Jackie and Bernie put on a spectacular
3 course carvery meal and I'm sure this year will be no different! After the food is demolished we move onto the part that everybody waits for, the presentation. Every year the prizes get bigger and better and the plan is to improve them this year.
For extra value you can get
VIP entry for
£400 which gets you not only what you see above but also
exclusive car parking close to the clubhouse to ease you into the day rather than lugging your tools half way across the car park.
Celebrity VIP treatment also gets you an upgrade on the bacon roll to a
Full English Breakfast on arrival in your own secluded part of the clubhouse as well as an array of
gifts that are essential for the day.
If you would like to enter you can find an entry form opposite. You can enter as
teams of 3 or
individually and we will endeavour to make you up into a team. If there is a specific
PGA Professional you would like to play with, then please let us know and we can check their availability.
