Dear Golfers,
Easter Weekend Results
The Masters is the catalyst for the big boys' season and seems to get every club golfer in the mood to blow the dust off their clubs and get their own season underway. At R&CPGC, the Easter weekend signals the start of ours. There were over 300 entries for the weekend but who doid the business to claim the first major win of the season?
Drury Challenge Cup
Good Friday saw it's customary Drury Challenge Cup which had a whopping 147 entries split into 2 divisions.
Taking the spoils in Division 2 was Jamie Gunn who knocked in a cracking 39 points which consisted of a front 9 of 21 points, including two 4 pointers! A more consistent back 9 of 18 points made up the rest of his score with a helping hand of another 4 pointer.
Jamie's Pro Shop account is looking rather healthy and to sweeten the deal his handicap also took a hit of 2 whole shots from 18.8 to 16.8. Jamie can add this to his winter series victory in the January Stableford earlier this year. Well done Jamie!
However, that great score wasn't enough to take the ultimate prize of becoming Drury Challenge Cup Champion 2017 because that feat was accomplished from Division 1 in the shape of Terry Fogarty. Terry fired in a very respectable score of 40 points with two consistent nines of 20 points a piece. Terry's round only had one 4 pointer but he did have seven 3 pointers, something Arsene Wenger would kill for!
Like Jamie, Terry has got some wedge to spend in the Pro Shop, which I'm sure wont last very long. Terry's handicap also took a 2 shot slash meaning he went from 7 to 5, welcome to category 1 Terry!
Wood Cup
The following day we had the Betterball Wood Cup where the top 16 scores made it through to the Mitchener Shield, a straight knockout competition. Anything less than 40 points is always in danger of not making the grade and this year was no different where 40 points scraped in with a countback!
Things were far more comfortable for Paul Jarman & Graham Dunnachie who had a massive score. Their place in The Mitchener Shield was never in doubt with this score! Paul & Graham did most of the hard work on the front 9 with a whopping 24 points making a hatful of 3 pointers as well as a 4 pointer too.
Don't think they eased off on the back 9, oh no. The guys weren't content with just making it through to the Mitchener, they wanted to win the Wood Cup! The back 9 was just as solid with 22 points making many more 3 pointers, giving them a grand total of 46 points to take a 2 point victory over 3 pairs on 44 points. Well done Paul & Graham!
If you did enough to make it to the Mitchener Shield, make sure you keep your eye out for the draw which will be posted in the changing room with the other knockout competitions this week.
Pro-Am
With the 2017 season officially underway here at R&CPGC our heads will shortly be turning to the annual Pro-Am. PGA Professionals from all over the South Region will be flocking to R&CPGC with their 3 amateurs in search of a win. But if that doesn't happen, then a fun day out is always guaranteed.
For those of you who have played in it before, you will know how much of a good day it is. The last few years we have been blessed with fantastic weather to add to the beauty of the day. Each and every year the R&CPGC members are complimentary of their PGA Professional who always make their day enjoyable.
Once again this year we will have some fantastic prizes up for grabs for the best amateur teams as well as our very own Amen Corner. A cash prize will be for grabs for the leading professional scores through 11,12 and 13 to test the metal of the professionals!
The VIP package will also be available again this year where, for £400, your team gets preferential parking closer to the clubhouse and an upgrade to a full English breakfast in your own private dining area as well as a goody bag on arrival with your essentials for the day.
Zane Scotland and his team consisting of his dad and R&CPGC member Bernie Scotland have won the team prize for the last 2 years. So no doubt everybody will be gunning for them this year!
So, if that has convinced you to give it a go for the first time, or you are one of the die hard faithfuls of the Pro-Am, then click here or on the image to download an entry form.
