After a 21 year wait and 74 Major Championship appearances, Sergio Garcia took his rightful place amongst the list of legends. Using his Spanish flair and unbelievable ball striking, Sergio claimed the green jacket in a playoff against Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose.
Sergio was seemingly in control taking an early 2 shot lead but 3 quick-fire birdies from Justin Rose meant they were all level at the turn. Bogies at 10 & 11 for Sergio gave Justin a 2 stroke lead but we all know what can happen on the back 9 of a Major on a Sunday afternoon...
After a poor drive on the par 5 13th from Sergio and with Justin hitting the fairway, it was looking like curtains for Sergio. A sensational par from Sergio and a missed birdie putt from Justin meant the scores remained the same, the momentum just swung back in Sergio's favour.
A birdie at the 14th for Sergio put him just 1 shot behind going onto the reachable par 5 15th. Right on cue was Sergio's infamous deadly accurate and long driving, hitting the fairway leaving just an 8 iron into the green. His approach landed and skimmed off the flag to go within 12 feet, Sergio would go on to hole the putt for eagle, whilst Justin made an easy birdie. All level heading to the 16th...
A birdie for Justin at the 16th gave him a 1 shot lead heading to the 17th but a poor second shot left him in the front bunker from which he couldn't get up and down; so they headed to the 18th all level. A pair of stunning second shots left both men with good looks at birdie to become Masters Champion. Justin putted first and missed leaving the path clear for Sergio to win...he missed! Back to the 18th tee for a playoff...
Once again Sergio bombed his drive down the fairway while Justin pushed his into the trees on the right, a poor chip-out left both players yards apart but Sergio was yet to hit his second shot. Advantage Sergio. Justin hit into the green and missed his putt, Sergio had 2 putts from 18 feet to become champion...he only needed one, a birdie sealed the victory!
The big question is, how did that effect the sweepstake? Find out below...
Sweepstake Result
Once again the Masters Sweepstake caused a stir at R&CPGC and has been the hot topic of conversation over the past couple of weeks. In the end we had 196 entries making for a rather large pot of winnings! Each day the leaderboard changed dramatically making the viewing all the more exciting.
After round 3 Will Clarke was leading but his team's sub-standard performance meant he finished the sweepstake in 49th place showing just how much the leaderboard can change! The excitement for most was over when Sergio holed the winning putt but for the R&CPGC patrons the fun rolled into Monday morning when the winner of the Sweepstake was to be announced.
When the winner was revealed I think pretty much every R&CPGC member had the same reaction of 'oh God we're never going to hear the end of this' , you may be able to guess who it is just from that statement but if you haven't, then we can reveal that it was Captain Terry Heaver who won!
When asked about his victory Terry simply had this to say
'if anybody would like any advice next year just put £10 in an envelope and I'd be happy to help'.
We won't tell anybody that you had a helping hand from the Club Manager and Head Professional when you were making your picks, eh Terry?
Motocaddy Rental Trollies
This week, our squad of rental trollies made some new additions with 4 BRAND NEW Motocaddy S1 trollies hitting the ProShop walkway.
We now have 7 electric trollies for hire, so the next time you're at R&CPGC why not test drive one of the new trollies and conserve some important energy for the clutch moments coming down the stretch.
For a mere £6, that could be the difference between winning and losing your match!
Range Mats
The facelift to the driving range has reached completion this week with the final 5 range mats making their way to R&CPGC.
As you would have seen, the old mats would curl up at the sides due to the ever changing British weather but the new mats have a small hard rubber base to stop this from happening, meaning a more productive practice from a more realistic lie.

It’s time to consider something different The majority of golfers are switching to Lithium batteries to power their electric trolley because, with a 5-year limited warranty, it provides a reliable and more cost-effective option than a Lead-Acid alternative. Now is the ideal time to swap as we’re offering £25 OFF a Lithium battery when you trade-in your old one. | Click here to find out why it pays to go Lithium |
