Stormy Weather! Put your safety first

As summer takes hold it brings the inevitable risk of thunder storms. Should you find yourself on the course when thunder rolls in, please follow the club’s instruction.

Course Evacuation

When it is considered necessary to evacuate the course due to the threat of a lightning strike, a siren will sound one prolonged note.

Players should avoid taking cover on high ground and under lone trees and evacuate the golf course safely at the earliest opportunity.

It’s the law!!

“If there is a risk of lightning, play must be discontinued and players must proceed in accordance with Rule 6-8, whether or not a siren is sounded. Play is automatically discontinued with a prolonged note of the siren and a player may not override that decision.”

We really would hate to lose you!

Pro Am Thursday 3rd July

Volunteers on the day

We are looking for 10 volunteers to help out on the day, for a couple of hours each, either ball spotting on the 1st and 10th holes or to serve food and drinks to the players at the half way hut. To put your name down please come and see us in the pro shop or call us on 01474 823658 where any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Advertise your company name on the day

This year's Pro Am is a great opportunity to advertise a bit about your company with over 150 competitors and many more supporters visiting our club during the day. Please email Warren at warren_wood@hotmail.co.uk for more information.

Kent Cricket President’s Day - A Tuesday in the Park

R&CP member Graham Johnson, this year’s K.C.C.C. President and himself a master of the art (pictured below left), brought Kent Cricket to Cobham for their President’s Day. Seventy two players, many of them professional cricketers from past and present, teed it up on a very pleasant afternoon.

Current players taking part included Darren Stevens, Adam Ball, Brendan Nash, Mitch Claydon and Aussie international Doug Bollinger. Stars of years gone by included Charles Rowe, Ben Trott, John Shepherd (pictured above right) and ‘Deadly’ Derek Underwood. The day was also blessed with the presence of Bob ‘the Cat’ Bevan MBE, President of K.C.C.C. for 2013.

To the victor the spoils

K.C.C.C. Chairman George Kennedy was partnered by Keith Oakley, Robin Santo - Gleaves, Group Managing Director of Balreed, Kent’s major sponsor in the LV County Championship and our very own Captain Steve Howard. What did they do to deserve that! On the day however, they were no match for the team including Doug Bollinger, Paul McNamara and John Stevens (49 points off 24!!!) who ran out comfortable winners.

Far left shows George Kennedy next to Steve. On the right is Graham with the victorious team. Far right is Doug Bollinger, Kent’s overseas player for the current season.

Coaching In The 21st Century - NEW! FlightScope Skills Application

New FlightScope software allows golfers to assess and benchmark their golf games using a set of virtual targets to aim at during a practice session. Data from each shot is collected and given a score based on the ball’s proximity to the target. Scores are cumulated for all targets, to give an overall session total.

The FlightScope Skills game is custom built for each player, allowing for the number of targets, target shape, distance and size to be set depending on the players goal. Golfers can also create extra pressure during games by adding a time limit and even have targets pop up randomly to mimic a real golf round.

The incredible NEW Skills application will be available to all my students from the 2nd- 20th July. Slots are already disappearing fast, so book early to avoid disappointment!

Haines finishes 61st in La Gomera

Matt finished in a tie for 61st place last week shooting scores of 68, 72, 74, 70 for a 72 hole total of 284, level par. After round one Matt was lying in a top 10 position on 3 under par, but unfortunately rounds 2 and 3 halted his progress as the leading 20 players rocketed clear with rounds in the 60's.

To follow Matt’s progress please follow the Challenge Tour link on the European Tour website, which can be found here.

Monthly Medal and KCPFA Cup

Last Saturday we held our monthly medal and KCPFA cup on a day of very mixed weather. With many of the morning players being disrupted by heavy showers, light drizzle and even a clap of thunder, and the afternoon players enjoying glorious sunshine it was surprising that many of the better scores came from the morning players. In Division 1 Joe Hughes, starting at 7am, came in with a nett 67 and Peter Norman, also playing in the morning, won Division 2 with a nett 70. Was it anything to do with the new driver Peter?? Who knows!

Cobham Week

As I’m sure you’re aware Cobham week is fast approaching. This year we have a new event on the schedule, a Men’s Open on Sunday 6th July starting the week off with a bang! The format is 18 holes medal play, with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Gross and Nett. This is open to members and visitors and entry closes on 22nd June. Forms are available on the club website and also in the Office.

Summer Shows Its Face

Golf courses love sunshine. Another glorious week of weather and the course is looking great.

Head Greenkeeper Barry and his team are beavering away keeping the course in shape and the greens are rolling very well.

Barry tested the greens last Monday in the wake of some light maintenance and reported 8.8 on the stimpmeter. The European Tour looks for 11.0 or thereabouts, we'll look to report as our greens pick up pace.

Refurbished Bunkers - 1st Hole & Holes 5 – 11

The recent Local Rule regarding these bunkers has now been rescinded. ALL areas of ALL bunkers are now in play. However, certain isolated areas remain GUR and are marked with an unbroken blue line. If your ball comes to rest in these areas, relief MUST be taken.

Use the 'tee drill' to groove a powerful strike

Last week we looked at how brands are creating irons that offer more distance than ever before. With a 9-iron in your hands, as opposed to a 7-iron, we're talking more looks at birdies - so long as your ball-striking is sound. So, here's a drill to help you deliver cleaner, more powerful strikes...
