It's been a couple of weeks since my last newsletter due to the Christmas period and I hope everybody over indulged in food and drink just as much as we did! Here's what's been going at R&CPGC over the last couple of weeks...

Club news

Children's Christmas Party

At this very busy time of the year Santa Claus still made an effort to come and visit his favourite children; the sons, daughters, grandsons, and grand-daughters of the R&CPGC members. To make sure that all the children had a brilliant time, Santa sent a couple of his elves to install his portable Grotto with the help of Mandy Ellis, Dave Raymond & Terry Heaver.

There were around 40 children all patiently waiting to see the big man and whatever goodies he had for them. But first they all played party games such as mummy dressing where they had to cover some hearty volunteers in toilet paper to make their own mummy with the fastest team crowned the winners. The children were then sat down for juice and snacks before the main event...

Once the children were fed, watered and full of e-numbers, Santa Claus had arrived and was ready to start asking each child what they wanted for Christmas and after they had reeled off their long lists, Santa gave each and every child a gift.

The event couldn't have gone any better with every child's face (and a few adults) lighting up; the Christmas magic had cast its spell. A big thank you to Mandy, Dave & Terry for giving up their spare time to help make the event as magical as it was. Also a big thank you to Santa for giving up his time too and hopefully he delivered all the other childrens' presents on time!

Competition news

Beat The Staff Challenge

On Friday 23rd December we had the annual Beat The Staff Challenge where members got into teams of 4 to try and better whatever the Dream Team had to offer in a Texas Scramble format. We had 11 teams all trying to knock the Staff Team off their throne, but were there any challengers worthy of that audacious feat?

The All Star team consisted of John Aughterlony, Jo Marchant, Rob Wills & of course 'The Wizard' and did we come out the traps fast, birdieing the first 5 holes! Surely we wasn't going to be stopped? The birdies dried after that and so we actually thought our crown was going to come under threat...

Once everybody had finished we all headed back into the clubhouse for some festive snacks, kindly prepared by Bernie & Jackie which went down an absolute treat! Now for the bit everybody had been waiting for...the results! In true X Factor fashion John read the results out in reverse order just to raise the tension a bit more, like it needed to be any higher! Slowly but surely though the member's teams fell 1 by 1 until we were left with 3 teams; the Staff Team and 2 others.

In 3rd place were the Staff Team who were beaten by the finest of margins; with the other 2 teams beating us by 0.5. The first lucky team consisted of Mark Ward, Mark Lee & Henry Phillips (these bandits didn't even need a fourth man). The other team was made up of Curtis Ripley, James Murphy, Perry Angel & Ross Wilkinson which technically makes them a staff team so the Staff will remain unbeaten until next year!

Whilst he had the microphone in his hand John also wanted to announce the side bet the Staff Team had with another of the teams which fortunately for us weren't either of the teams that beat us. Before the first tee shots were hit Ray Pooley, Dave Ballard, Christ Carpenter & John Martin offered a friendly wager where the winning team walked away with £5 each for who finished with the best score. So all in all not a bad day; the Staff were unbeaten & we got paid for winning!

Advent Raffle Winners

During the presentation of the Beat The Staff Challenge I also drew out the last 3 winners of the 2016 ProShop Advent Raffle. The first prize up for grabs was a PING Crossover hybrid which was won by Ray Gardner who loves it so much he came in a few days later to buy a matching one so expect to see his name on some honours boars in 2017!

The next prize was won by Nigel Gill who got his hands on an Under Armour waterproof suit, a fantastic lightweight suit which gives him no excuse to not venture out in the wet weather. But the big story and winning the main prize which was a Callaway Fusion driver was Chris Norris! Chris must be the luckiest man at the golf club as he has won either the first or second prize for the last 3 years and every time the main draw has been done we have asked one of the members to pull out the tickets!

Rumour has it Chris will be releasing a series of self-help books on how to improve your luck! Available in all good book stores.
