Captain pro challenge

With Terry's Captaincy drawing to a close we still had some brave or foolish (I'll let you decide) golfers we needed to dispose of in our Captain & Professional Series and with 2 matches in as many days the old Skipper's fatigue could come into play.

First up on Saturday, Eric Goodwin & John Beslee were going to chance their luck to get a 'W' next to their names, could they be the first pair to achieve that ambitious feat for over 3 years? They didn't get off to the best of starts being 2 down through 3 holes thanks to 2 birdies from 'The Wizard'. The signs were telling us this could be a quick match as I swiftly got my round to 5 under par through 9 holes and stood over a 10 foot eagle putt on the 10th hole.
Eric and John dug in though and managed to take us to the 17th where they found themselves dormie 2 down; I was 7 under par and wondering how the match was still alive, that just shows the quality being played in the match. It must have be great for Terry to watch! Finally, Eric and John caved in and we secured a hard fought 3&1 victory.

The next day Terry and I were challenged by Vice Captain Steve Thouless and Robin Packer and we both knew this was going to be another tough match. Once again we were seemingly in control of the match getting 3 up through 12 holes, I didn't quite capture the same form from the previous day but I was still 1 under par and the Captain was starting to fatigue which Steve & Robin took full advantage of as they started making nett and gross birdies to draw the match back to level standing on the 18th tee... nervous times! Both teams negotiated their way down the hole leading to Steve having a 10 footer to win the match and end my 3 year unbeaten streak but the pressure seemed to be too much for him and so the record goes on!

New arrivals

The latest addition to the ProShop this week are the Golf Pride Tour SNSR putter grips. The SNSR grip is made from a soft-tuned rubber formulation to give tour like feedback and also to encourage a lighter grip pressure so you can make those all-important smooth strokes when you're standing over a clutch putt...if only these came into stock last week, Steve Thouless might have hold the winning putt on Sunday!

There are 2 styles of the SNSR grip to account for all types of golfers. The first has the traditional pistol shape to it with a wider top end, tapering down which is the shape preference of 75% of Tour players. This shape allows for the golfer to lock the upper hand in for a consistent hand placement building confidence with every stroke.

The other style is a straight down non-taper shape design which allows for a consistent hand pressure and feel. The straight non taper design has soft rounded edges which are bevelled for extra palm and finger pad comfort.

We only have a limited number of SNSR grips at the moment so if you think this could revolutionise your putting come in as soon as possible to get one on your putter!

Tour news

The Captain & Professional matches came at a perfect time as they proved to be good practice for me as I am playing in The Westcoast PGA Southern Pros Champs at Kings Hill GC this week. After surpassing my own expectations in my last outing at East Sussex National I went to work with the GC2 to really hone in my wedge distances and the starting direction of my iron shots as this is what I felt faltered at East Sussex National.

The GC2 is an ideal piece of equipment as it tells you how much spin you are creating and in which direction. So with this data at my disposal and the copious amount of knowledge of the golf swing I have worked hard on my game to ensure that I'm ready to take on Kings Hill GC and fingers crossed return with a trophy!

Success story

After yet another successful year for Alfie Plant. He has been selected to represent England in the Eisenhower Trophy which is at Riviera Maya GC in Mexico. There are 125 nations being represented by the best 3 amateur golfers in which they compete over 72 holes in 4 days to have possession of The Eisenhower Trophy for 2 years. England Golf took their team out to Miami on Monday for warm weather training and to acclimatise to the humidity before heading onto Mexico for more practice rounds and eventually the main event.  Good luck Alfie, we are all rooting for you!

Shop sale RED

September Sale

Don't forget next weekend, Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September, we are having the biggest sale we probably ever had; all clothing will be sold at cost price, that's right for 2 days only you pay what we pay! There's some fantastic bargains to be had with FootJoy, adidas, Oscar Jacobson and (the very popular debutant to the ProShop this year) Under Armour up for grabs.

Not only is the clothing massively reduced, both Rob and myself are doing 3 for 2 on all single lessons whether that be 1/2 hour, 1 hour or even playing lessons! You can get some extra pearls of wisdom which could see your golf game elevated to the next level.
Make sure you take advantage of all these fantastic offers because once Monday 26th September rolls around the ship would have sailed and you could be kicking yourself!

Video of the week

Tiger Woods has announced his return to competitive action, well, sort of. To celebrate his possible comeback, here’s a flashback to the baggy-trousered great.
