Whats in your bag

A common question I get asked whenever I'm coaching or custom fitting is 'have I got the right clubs in my bag?'  So to give you a bit of a helping hand I have given you an insight into what is in my golf bag...

Starting with the driver, I am currently using the Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 with an extra stiff shaft and 9 degrees of loft. This combination allows me to launch the ball on a powerful penetrating flight which is resulting in some monster drives, the GC2 recorded that I am carrying the ball 289 yards on average.

The next club down is my Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 18 degree fairway wood which is equivalent to a 5 wood, also with an extra stiff shaft. The fairway wood has been caught on GC2 carrying 233 yards which fits perfectly in between my driver and my 3 iron. There are 2 weights on the sole of the club, 3g and 16g, and their position can make a big difference to the ball flight. You can put the 16g weight further forward in the head for a lower ball flight, perfect for links golf, or have the 3g weight further forward for more forgiveness and a higher launch, perfect for hitting into par 5s.

I use the Callaway Apex Pro irons 3 to pitching wedge with the KBS Tour stiff steel shafts and I must say they have an exceptionally soft feel off the face and are extremely forgiving and easy to shape round the golf course. The longer irons (3 to 5) have a slight offset and a tungsten insert to lower the Centre of Gravity and launch the ball higher, whereas the short irons (6 to PW) have a higher Centre of Gravity for a more penetrating trajectory. After hitting each club on the GC2 I discovered that there is a consistent 10-12 yard gap between each one of my clubs starting at 210 yards with the 3 iron to 175 yards with the 6 iron, right the way down to 145 yards with the PW.

As I move closer to the green I carry just 2 wedges with 50 & 54 degrees of loft, I find these are perfect for me because I can still hit these full whilst getting a good distance out of them and when it comes to around the greens they are very easy to control with a soft feel off the clubface.

Finally the most important club in the bag...the putter. I recently put the Odyssey Toe Up #1 in the bag which has really helped my putting because of the technology. The shaft has been moved more towards the centre of the clubface which makes it easier for the putter to return to the ball square meaning the ball will start on line much more often. Combined with the Aimpoint green reading technique I'm starting to see more putts drop in!

A vital piece of kit in my golf bag is my Bushnell giving me exact yardages to the pins meaning I can compare that to all the yardages I have accumulated from the GC2 making it so much easier to get my club selection right.

If you are not 100% confident that you know how far each of your clubs goes then why not book a Gapping Session with the GC2 Launch Monitor and remove all doubt when you're on the course.

Competition news

Golf Foundation Par

Last weekend we had the Golf Foundation Par where 96 members were playing in the rather unique 'bogey' format; matchplay against the course. Only nett birdies or better are good enough to win the hole, par gets you a halve and anything worse loses you the hole...a very tough format.
Taking the spoils was Stefan Syplywczak who managed to halve with the course and give his ProShop account a nice boost of funds.

Well done Stefan!
