After experiencing 4 indifferent days on the links of Royal Troon GC, Henrik Stenson went toe to toe with Phil Mickelson on Sunday afternoon and came out on top after a scintillating final round of 63 to take a 3 shot victory. It was probably one of the best final days of a major for a long while; To not only see Henrik fire in a 63 but Phil also recorded a fantastic 65 which would usually have been good enough to win the tournament.
Two of the first three majors have now been won by players that use Callaway clubs...the club that just keeps delivering! Since Callaway has been introduced to the ProShop this year, it has been very successful with over 20 R&CPGC members taking a visit to The National Fitting Centre in Chessington and most of them making the switch to Callaway clubs.
If you're thinking of updating your golf bag, why not book a fitting either here or at the National Fitting Centre to see what improvements Callaway can make to your game. We've got a whole host of fitting clubs that you can take out onto the golf course too, so you can measure it against your own club, including the very popular XR16 Driver as used by Danny Willett during his Masters victory.
Open Sweepstake
The sweepstakes are very popular amongst the R&CPGC members and this one was no exception, we tried a different format this year and it really got the members thinking about who was going to make the grade for their team! They had to pick 1 player from the top 25 players in the world, 1 from 26-50, 1 from 51-75 and then 1 from the rest of the field.
The names kept jumping up and down the leaderboard every day, but after yo-yoing around Ian Jardine came out on top taking victory by 7 shots with his team consisting of Open Champion Henrik Stenson, Andy Sullivan, Martin Kaymer & Paul Lawrie giving him a whopping £350 to spend in the shop!
The 4th and final major for 2016 is coming up next week; The USPGA Championship and Jason Day will be hoping he can make a successful defence to his title from last year. Once again this means that the ProShop will be running a sweepstake just so you can watch with an added interest. This time all you have to do is pick 1 player from the top 50 golfers in the world and 1 from the 51-100 golfers in the world rankings. Please enter via the ProShop or follow the link here to an entry form.
Best Putter In The Club
The Best Putter In The Club competition made its return to R&CPGC this week and with Terry Watts claiming top spot for the last 2 years, was there anybody out there who could knock him off his throne?
Rob was out on the putting last Sunday twisting member's arms to have a go at the long uphill, curly putt trying to steal Terry's crown while they were warming up for the Monthly Medal & Centenary Bowl. For a long while the nearest anybody could get was about 2 feet away until Tony Lovell stepped up and got his ball to within a foot which looked likely to win...until defending champion Terry Watts signed off his medal round. Terry came over to see what he had to beat and within 4 attempts he was top of the tree, 7.5 inches!
It was going to take a miracle, we thought, to get any closer without breaching the rules. That is exactly what happened when Dave Podd, a self-confessed poor putter, stepped up and took a mere 2 putts to claim victory and deny Terry his 3rd successive victory, finishing 3.5 inches from to target…never has Dave been so pleased with 3.5 inches!
Monthly Medal & Centenary Bowl
Last Sunday was the Monthly Medal & Centenary Bowl which was won by Curtis Ripley with a fantastic score of nett 68 playing off 15. Not only does Curtis get his name on the honours board, his ProShop account will get a healthy injection and his handicap has been reduced to 13, a 2 shot reduction!
Well done Curtis, keep it up!
