Par 3 Championship
Another Major Championship has been and gone and Dustin Johnson played exceptionally well to take the US Open crown at Oakmont Country Club but that's not the main story this week...
Last Thursday was the annual Par 3 Championship and once again it was very well supported with 50 members taking part and not even the rain was enough to dampen the spirits on this very unique par 3 course. We had a shotgun start at 5:00pm and every tee was filled with teams of 4 vying for the most sought after prizes in all of golf!
We had a Nearest the Pin prize on the 8th hole which was from in front of the 6th tee onto the 5th green, 112 yards blind shot with the big tree to navigate over as well...not for the feint hearted. Bold as brass, Curtis Ripley stepped up and knocked his ball in close to secure the gold chain and glasses!
We even had a hole in 1, Bernie Mullins expertly navigated from the 5th tee onto the 4th green and over the tree that stood in his way! Bernie kindly bought wine and beer for those that were present and he even picked up a little prize which was a 125th Anniversary brass pitchfork.
Every team was playing for the wonderfully eccentric USA top hats but they had to all play well as they needed the 3 best stableford scores to claim victory; that's exactly what Paul Swaisland, Phil Pitcher, Steve Howard and Dave Wingrove did coming home with a great score of 71 points and they wore their prize with great pride all night!
Alongside the team prize was the main prize, the one they all wanted...the individual winner's prize! With an amazing 27 points was Captain Terry Heaver who picked up the Statue of Liberty crown and torch! Like the team winners, Terry was more than happy to sport his prize for the night but that comes as no surprise as he's already dressed up as Santa's elf, a pig & a horse and jockey!
Once the presentation was finished it was time for everybody to tuck into their fish & chips which made the short journey from the world famous grills of Naz Gill's shops.
Once again the food was of an excellent standard and was complimented by everybody! The lounge was in a very jovial mood with the US Open on the big screen and loads of American style sweets on offer, the event was once again a complete success and all involved had a good time.
24 Hour Golf Marathon
We had 3 very brave ladies take on what can only be described as one of the most physically demanding challenges... play golf for 24 hours! Jennifer Stark-Duce, Gwar Evans & Linda Berriman set off on their amazing journey at 9:00pm on Friday with their loyal husbands working a rota to give them all support through the night.
What amazed me the most is what people would put themselves through in order to raise money for the Captain's Charity, The Honeypot. Some golfers turn their nose up at the thought of playing 36 holes in 1 day so what these 3 ladies have done is a phenomenal achievement, it even bought some members out to support them through the night; Jo Beslee being the angel that she is even came down in the early hours of Saturday morning to feed and water the brave golfers.
Well done girls on a fantastic achievement!
To help get the ladies through the last couple of hours I went out and met up with them for a few holes just to give them that extra minutes break between shots and to hopefully raise the morale but to my surprise the girls were still in great spirits (albeit very tired) and actually still playing a very good standard of golf.
Pink Buggy
Some of you may be wondering why there was a pink buggy riding around the course this week and no it wasn't Bernie Ecclestone plotting a new destination for Formula 1! The buggy is specially designed in aid of Breast Cancer Care in which all proceeds from the hire of the buggy went to the charity.
It's amazing how such a small thing can cause such a stir, I've lost count how many people have phoned up to book a buggy and have wanted to take the pink one, a few disappointed phone calls unfortunately as it was already out hard at work.
Janet Batchelor was one of the generous members who donated to the Breast Cancer Care to hire the buggy and managed to cause quite a stir amongst the ladies with many of them wanted to have a ride on it and pose for the camera...
Thank you to everybody who got involved for such a great cause!
Pro-Am
The Pro-Am is right around the corner and we are still calling out for teams to play, we are down on entries from last year and so would love to get as close to that number as possible this year. The day still promises to be as fun and as entertaining as previous years, you can get the chance to see what a PGA Professional's approach to a shot is whilst still getting some handy hints and tips to what you can do to improve your own luck on the course.
If you want to enter by yourself we have a list of people without a team so we can always find you a team, or if you have a team and wish to enter you can follow the link here to an entry form alternatively you can always come into the Pro Shop to put your names down.
