How Important Are Sharp Grooves On Your Wedges?

So many golfers have the same wedges for years and years then complain about how bad their short game is. Having fresh, sharp grooves in your wedges is pivotal for you have any chance of getting the ball to stop on the green. But what is the point of the grooves?

In a nutshell the grooves are designed to increase friction; especially in wet conditions. In the short time the ball is on the clubface there's a lot that actually happens; firstly the ball comes into contact with the clubface, then it slides up the clubface and this is where the grooves do their job, applying  grip which leads to spin therefore adding consistency to distance control.

The grooves are like very little teeth which grab hold of the skin of the ball which causes it to 'wind up' internally so that when the sliding phase is complete and the ball comes off the clubface it has maximum spin. When these teeth aren't as sharp as they once were the amount of friction reduces and the sliding phase is longer than it should be, resulting in less spin.

Player's Championship

The Players Championship came to a close last weekend and was won in superb style by World No. 1 Jason Day who after rounds of 63, 66, 73 & 71 secured an impressive wire to wire victory and picking up a mere $1.8million. But what has made Jason Day into this formidable opponent?

Looking at his stats for 2016 he has only played 10 events so far making the cut in 9 of them. Of those 9 he has won 3 times and come in the top 10 every other time!  Jason Day is also the leader in putting stats from 4 feet making every single putt he has looked at, he is also 2nd in the strokes gained from putting and 2nd in the overall strokes gained too.

Jason Day also has an eye watering stroke average of 69.8 meaning on average he is shooting under par every time! After seeing those stats it's easy to see why he has won over $5.5million already this season, the scary thing is that the season is still young! 

 

Par 3 Championships

The next official major is right around the corner, The US Open at Oakmont Country Club. More importantly this means the return of the Par 3 Championships which was a great success last year with over 50 people taking part and we would love for it to have the same interest this year. We have a specially designed 9 hole course which will throw most of you into positions that you wouldn't hit shots from...well that's the hope anyway!  

This event is great fun and be held on Thursday 16th June with a 5:00pm shotgun start, we already have 5 teams confirmed which leaves just 4 remaining spaces!  

Once all the fun and games have been had on the course we will all head back in for some freshly cooked fish & chips kindly supplied by R&CPGC member Naz Gill's world renowned grills whilst kicking back watching the action unfold at the US Open.

Royal Marines Challenge Shield

 Last weekend was the Royal Marines Challenge Shield where 127 members took to the course trying to get their name on the honours board. Taking the winnings in Division 2 and giving his ProShop account an injection was the gentle giant Terry Wickham with a fantastic score of net 68 but that wasn't quite enough for victory because Richard Davis fired in a net 67 after an impressive gross 74.

Both guys have seen their handicaps slashed and so a new challenge awaits for both of them, well done guys!

 

Pro-Am

In less than 6 weeks we have the best of the PGA South Region Professionals turning out with their teams of amateurs in an attempt to claim the coveted R&CPGC Pro-Am winners title. Last years champion Zane Scotland will be returning to defend his crown and hopefully go one stroke better thus setting a new course record! With over £2000 of amateur prizes up for grabs plus the opportunity to watch some of the regions finest talent close up which will make for an entertaining day all round, you never know you may learn a thing or two.
